Miss Wilkins’ Class Newsletter!
August 2013
Welcome to third grade! I am so excited to have your child in my class this year. I am looking forward to a year filled with many learning
experiences, exciting challenges and new friendships. With hard work and a positive attitude your child can reach his/ her highest
potential this year and make great learning gains. A great way to get your child on track is to do some goal setting: What are his/ her
hopes for this year? What would he/ she most want to accomplish? In preparation for the first day, here are some important things to
know:
Homework!
Students should read for at least 30 minutes EVERY night. In addition to reading, homework will be assigned nightly and written into the
agenda. These assignments will range from Math to Writing, to Science and Social Studies. This will correlate to what we are learning in
class. Practicing these skills at home is extremely important for your child’s success! Please check your child’s agenda every night to check
for homework and any communication from me. This is also a great place for you to write me notes. I will be checking the planner every
day. Along with homework and communication, you should check your child’s planner for behavior. There is a color coding system that
will let you know how your child’s behavior was that day. The colors are:
Orange: Perfect Day!
Purple: Good behavior with one slip-up/ Needed to be given a reminder
Yellow: Behavior was not good/ Needed to be given a verbal warning
Blue: Very disruptive behavior/ Needed to move seat
Pink: Unacceptable behavior/ Needed to be removed from the room
If you would please sign the agenda each night, it would be greatly appreciated. Along with the agenda, your child will have a Take-Home
Folder where homework will be kept in one pocket and in the other pocket will be graded papers and any important letters/ memos for
you.
Attendance:
In order for your child to be successful, he/ she needs to be in school as much as possible. Other than an illness, I ask that you strongly
reinforce attendance and punctuality with your child. Every day we will be engaging in important content that is essential to your child’s
progress. Please try your best to schedule doctor’s appointments after school. We have early release on Mondays, which is 1:15. On
Tuesday-Friday the students are released at 2:15.
Supplies:
The supply list on the school website is wonderful, but there are a few things missing. It asks for 3 folders and 3 notebooks. Your child will
need 5 folders (Take-Home, Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies) and 4 notebooks (Writing, Reading, Math, Science). If you are able to
get these, it would be terrific. I will provide supplies if needed. Also, throughout the year, these notebooks fill up, paper runs out, glue
dwindles away, dry erase markers and highlighters dry out, crayons quickly see the end of their coloring days, and tissues and hand
sanitizer are depleted by the end of the flu season. I ask that you stay in communication with your child throughout the year about the
supplies they are running low on and refresh their supply.
What are we Learning??
We will be starting out our Social Studies Unit learning about government and we will be exploring Energy in Science. In Math, we will be
starting with Multiplication! Start practicing multiplication facts with your child at night, In reading, we will be practicing reading
comprehension and learning many reading strategies, In writing we will being doing instruction on the writing process but will also be
incorporating writing into our Reading, Science, Social Studies, and Math lessons! Another way you can help at home is to read, read,
read! Pulling out nonfiction text from newspapers, magazines, and even online is great practice for your child along with fiction chapter
books.
Want to Volunteer?
There is a SERVE Volunteer Application in the packet you received that you need to fill out. Once you are approved we can discuss ways
you can help out in and/or outside of the classroom! :)
