ï‚´ A defibrillator is a device that sends electrical
energy, or shock, to the heart. The aim of using a
defibrillator is to treat cardiac arrest. The need for
this generally arises when the patient has ventricular
fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia, which are life-
threatening arrhythmias that occur when
contraction of the ventricles become abnormal.
Defibrillators have electrocardiogram (ECG) leads
and adhesive patches (or paddles). The adhesive
electrodes are the patches placed on the patient’s
chest that deliver the electric shock.
DEFIBRILLATOR
DEFIBRILLATION
ï‚´ Defibrillation is an asynchronous counter shock used to terminate
pulseless ventricular tachycardia(VT) or VF.
ï‚´ Three rapid consecutive shocks are delivered, with the first at an energy
of 200 J.
ï‚´ If unsuccessful, the shock is repeated at 200 to 300 J.
ï‚´ The third and subsequent shock will be 360 J.
*NOTE:- Be sure that no one is touching the bed of client when you are
doing the defibrillation.
IMPLANTABLECARDIOVERTER-
DEFIBRILLATOR{ICD}
ï‚´ An ICD monitors cardiac rhythm and detects and
terminates episodes of VT and VF.
ï‚´ The ICD sense VT and VF and delivers 25 to 30 J up
to four times, if necessary.
AUTOMATED EXTERNAL
DEFIBRILLATOR
ï‚´ An ICD is used in clients with episodes of spontaneous sustained VT
and VF unrelated.
ï‚´ The generator is most commonly implanted in the left pectoral
region.
ï‚´ An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device
that automatically diagnoses the life-
threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation (VF) and pulseless
ventricular tachycardia, and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the
application of electricity which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to re-
establish an effective rhythm.
ï‚´ AEDs are designed to be used by laypersons who ideally should have received
AED training. However, sixth-grade students have been reported to begin
defibrillation within 90 seconds, as opposed to a trained operator beginning
within 67 seconds. This is in contrast to more sophisticated manual and semi-
automatic defibrillators used by health professionals, which can act as
a pacemaker if the heart rate is too slow (bradycardia) and perform other
functions which require a skilled operator able to read electrocardiograms.
