Missouri State University will host a forum on the terrorist organization Boko Haram on February 19th. Dr. Bukola Oyeniyi, a professor of history at MSU, will examine Boko Haram's history, objectives, and the underlying factors driving its attacks in Nigeria. The forum aims to address why counter-terrorism efforts have failed and should focus on underlying issues rather than just defeating Boko Haram. It also seeks to raise global awareness of terrorism in Africa.
The document discusses the "four battles" facing China regarding the Xinjiang issue: (1) the battle for sovereignty over Xinjiang as some seek independence, (2) the battle for the will of the people as extremists try to influence youth, (3) the battle for peace as some claim Islam promotes violence, and (4) the battle for public opinion as some criticize China's approach. It argues that vocational training centers aim to rehabilitate and reemploy minor offenders but face unfair criticism. Overall, a peaceful, lawful approach is needed to address differences and uphold civilization.

Fanaticism and Barbarism: Synonyms of Dysfunctionality in Nigeria Todaypaperpublications3
?
Abstract: Civility is the language of decency, moderation, honesty, truthfulness, justice, equity, tolerance, mutual understanding, dialogue and mutual responsibility for the development of any society. There are other associated values and virtues, which are imbedded in the cultivation of civility in a polity such as patience and forgiveness. On the other hand, it renounces violence, coercion, destruction of life and property, as well as fanaticism and barbarism in every aspect of societal life. It denounces corruption and disorder. In fact, civility is antithetical to anarchy and lawlessness. But the reality of the Nigerian society manifests a total opposition to all the aforementioned virtues towards development and progress, especially with the current threats of Boko Haram and other political manipulations of the economy. It is in the light of this fact that the paper considers various acts of fanaticism and barbarism inflicted on the country, thus, challenging the sustainability of Nigeria as a nation.
This document discusses Islamophobia, including its definition, causes, manifestations, and effects. It defines Islamophobia as an irrational fear or dislike of Islam and Muslims that can lead to prejudice, stereotyping, discrimination and hatred. The document explores several causes of Islamophobia like ignorance of Islam, negative media portrayals, and actions by anti-Muslim groups. It describes how Islamophobia manifests through discrimination, hate speech, laws targeting Muslims, and general social exclusion. Finally, the document outlines some negative effects of Islamophobia like preventing Muslim participation, social unrest, and potential radicalization. It suggests interventions like anti-discrimination laws, education, awareness campaigns, and the work of NGOs to help
This document discusses the history of terrorism in Pakistan. It notes that terrorism became a prominent tool for political agendas in the late 1960s, used by Palestinians. Terrorism in Pakistan has significantly increased since 2001, with over 35,000 Pakistanis killed by 2009. After the US invasion of Afghanistan, al-Qaeda and Taliban sought refuge in Pakistan's tribal areas. Structural flaws in the tribal regions allowed militant groups like the Taliban to operate and offer parallel security/judicial systems. Religiously motivated terrorism poses a major threat today from groups drawing inspiration from Islam, Christianity, and other religions. Militant groups in Pakistan also have sectarian agendas and connections to international terrorist organizations.

Is Media Responsible for Rise of Islamophobia in America?
America is home to one of the most diverse Muslim inhabitants in the world. This includes people of nearly every cultural groups, country and school of thought. A significant proportion of Americans are of the opinion that Islam as a religion is incomparable with American values. Nathan Lean has stated that media plays a major role in the promotion of Islamophobia throughout the world. Reports have been observed where seven charitable foundations have spent 43 million dollars between 2001 to 2009 in order to support the spread of anti-Muslim rhetoric. Another factor was revealed which included 2010 Gallup poll win, which 43% of the Americans were, reported to feel a sense of prejudice against Muslims. Fox news has also been identified as the small component of Islamophobia in US media. Fox news has been found to retract false claims about Muslims. Various empirical evidences have been found to provide possible interactions between the latent Muslim feelings and media coverage.
However, since 2011, Muslims in the United States have been showing significant concern regarding extremism in the name of Islam across the world. Concurrently, majority are of the opinion that there is minimal support of extremism with Muslim community even though the general public differs (Spring 1,5). This has led to a rise in discernment and fear against Muslims in America. Such a social aversion and prejudice against Muslims in America has been gradually facilitating and continuing by vehement and uncivilized stereotypes exhibited in diverse forms of American media organization and political domains which instigate high level of prejudice, discrimination and exclusion of the Muslims. While some Americans believe Islamic religion promotes terrorism, this misconception is due to ignorance caused by media, but this could be solved by mandatory education about Islam in colleges.
The effect of media, chiefly mass news media as well as technology, in influencing Islamophobia has been increasing concern from the time of the 9/11 attacks. Several standpoints tend to problematize the way the media through numerous avenues related to news and film as well as nonfiction destructively depict, racialize and demonize Muslim-American identities. The impression of these edifices of Arabs and Muslims on unconstructive typecasts as well as events of marginalization amongst Muslim-American communities are apprehended in many academic domains. Considine in his study of Muslim portrayal in the United States during late 1980s and early 1990s have found that Muslims have been depicted negatively in news reporting since then. Moreover, majority of the narrations which mentioned Muslims to be intrinsically related to terrorism and war did not find sufficient evidence of more generalized negative prejudice. Howe.
This document examines the threat of violent Islamic extremism in the United States. It aims to evaluate fears about this threat, understand pathways to radicalization, and determine if there is a connection between Islam and jihadist beliefs. The author reviews literature on definitions of terrorism and radicalization. Studies show domestic terrorist attacks and plots have increased since 9/11, though the number of deaths is lower than other forms of political violence. There is debate around how to define and understand the radicalization process, with disagreement on whether there are clear pathways or if it is a complex, individual process influenced by ideology and happenstance. More research is needed to fully understand radicalization.

NONSTATE ADVERSARIES, FUNDAMENTALIST RELIGIOUS EXTREMISM, AND WEAPONS ARE THREE FORCES OF GLOBAL TERRORISM, ALL REPRESENTED BY TALIBAN FIGHTERS IN AFGHANISTAN.
Learning Objectives
1. 5.1Recognize that terrorism is a contentious issue that becomes hopelessly muddled by political and military considerations
2. 5.2Review the factors that are conducive to terrorism
3. 5.3Identify the goals, strategies, and weapons of terrorism
4. 5.4Identify the sources of funds that are used for financing terrorism
5. 5.5Review how terrorism adversely affects individuals, nations, and other groups
6. 5.6Summarize five kinds of terrorism
7. 5.7Examine the different ways of combating terrorism
8. 5.8Analyze the fundamental question about the balance between fighting terrorism and protecting democracy within the United States
The Boston Marathon bombing in April 2013 and the grisly murder of an off-duty British soldier in public in London in May 2013 that was filmed on mobile phones as the terrorist waited for police demonstrate a further shift away from centralized terrorist organizations to lone wolf terrorism. This kind of terrorism is conducted by self-motivated independent individuals. The attacks in Boston and London show how difficult it is to prevent lone wolf terrorism.
Successful U.S. counterterrorism measures against al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and in Pakistan, combined with failed democratic transitions in the Middle East and North Africa, have contributed to the shift of global terrorism to Africa. Domestic terrorist groups such as?Boko Haram, which means “Western education is sacrilege,” in northern Nigeria, collaborate with al-Qaeda. The Syrian civil war, chaos in Iraq following the U.S. withdrawal, and the disintegration of law and order in Libya have strengthened terrorism, most notably the group called the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), which claimed credit for the November 13, 2015 terrorist massacre in Paris.
The growing use of armed drones for targeted killings of suspected terrorists in Yemen, Pakistan, Somalia, Niger, and elsewhere raises many controversial issues. Drones are effective weapons against terrorists. Even though they kill fewer civilians than alternative methods, the loss of innocent civilian lives undermines their use.
Edward Snowden’s leaking of documents showing extensive spying on Americans as well as people and governments around the world by the National Security Agency (NSA) as part of America’s counterterrorism strategy raised global concerns about the basic right to privacy. It also has far-reaching consequences for U.S. security and foreign policy.
Osama bin Laden, widely viewed as the embodiment of global terrorism, was killed by U.S. Special Forces on May 1, 2011, in Pakistan. Despite this significant development, the war on terrorism continues. Think about how the escalation of global terrorism affects our daily lives. This global problem is now virtually inseparable from pe.

Muslim World in Encountering the Challenges of Global Extremism and TerrorismMohd Abbas Abdul Razak

Extremism and terrorism are not new phenomena that humanity has to deal with. They have been there in the history of mankind ever since the human population started to increase on this planet. In the past, there have been despotic leaders, individuals, and groups of people who used extremism and terrorism as a means to exterminate others in order to hold onto power and exert their dominance. The researchers of this small-scale qualitative study critically analyzed what is happening to the Muslims and what needs to be done in encountering the challenges of global extremism and terrorism. The researchers took a non-partisan stand in analyzing terrorism in the aftermath of the 9/11 attack that shocked the US and the world at large. The crux of the discussion in this research was centered around on the issues as to why western media take a double standard in reporting terror attacks around the globe, why the oppressed and displaced people of the world resort to terrorism, are terrorists born or made, what lessons can be learned by countries that are faced with terror attacks and racial tensions from role-model countries that are successful in maintaining peace and harmony within their diverse population. Besides discussing the main issues, the researchers have put forward their idealism for world peace and on how the world should stand united in combatting the alarming rate of extremism and terror attacks that happen all over the world today.

This document presents a study exploring how media portrayals of drug behavior, specifically shows like Breaking Bad and Weeds, may influence societal perceptions of drug dealers. The researchers hypothesize that those who watch shows featuring drug behavior will view it more positively. The study uses Cultivation Theory as a framework, which proposes that extensive media exposure shapes viewers' social reality. An online survey collected data on participants' television viewing habits and attitudes towards drug behavior. The results will analyze whether exposure to certain shows correlates with more positive perceptions of drug dealing.

Samantha Nichols saw a need for more diversity and interfaith dialogue at Missouri State University, which led her to create the student organization "Linked". Linked focuses on bringing together people of different religious and secular backgrounds to work on community service projects. One impactful project was a candlelight vigil for victims of a shooting at a Jewish community center. Nichols believes creating opportunities to learn about different perspectives and work with people from diverse backgrounds is valuable for everyone.

University to host forum on Boko Haram
SPRINGFIELD—The College of Humanities and Public Affairs at Missouri State University will host a forum
on the terrorist organization, Boko Haram, from 12:30-1:45 p.m., Feb. 19 in Strong Hall, Room 301.
“Boko Haram: Taming the Monster” will look at Dr. Bukola Oyeniyi’s research on the terrorist organization
and the motivations behind its attacks. Oyeniyi, professor of history at Missouri State, will lead the forum to
examine the history and objectives of Boko Haram.
“The forum is set to address the underlying factors of terrorism, debunking the single-cause narratives given by
the government and mainstream media about terrorism and why the global war on terrorism is failing in
Nigeria,” said Oyeniyi. “Counter-terrorism efforts should focus essentially on the underlying issues rather than
annihilating Boko Haram as a group.”
The forum is being held in response to the terrorist attack on Charlie Hebdo’s satirical magazine office and the
outrage that ensued afterwards. Twelve people were killed during the terrorist attack after the magazine released
a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad.
“Global revulsion against terrorism peaked a few weeks ago following the terrorist attack on Charlie Hebdo,”
Oyeniyi said. “Recent police action against a terrorist sleeper cell in Belgium has also served as a wake-up call
to nations that the battle against terrorism is far from being won.”
The presentation is a call-to-action to gain global attention to terrorism in Africa. This event is free and open to
the public.
