Christian Science was founded in 1879 in Massachusetts by Mary Baker Eddy, who had up to 400,000 followers worldwide. She was influenced by Phineas Quimby's teachings on spiritual healing and added her own interpretations of Jesus using prayer and the mind to heal people. Eddy established the Church of Christ, Scientist and its headquarters, the Mother Church, in Boston. She authored the Christian Science textbook Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures and founded a publishing company and newspaper.
