Decoding Culture: Beyond the Fluff and Back to BusinessJeff Gallimore
油
The document discusses organizational culture and how to change culture. It argues that culture is important because it predicts both IT and organizational performance. Culture is difficult to describe, measure and change. The document recommends assessing current culture, educating people on why culture matters, and acting to model new behaviors. Leaders control consequences and rewards and thus influence culture. Changing mindsets and actions can help create a more positive culture with better performance and employee well-being.

The document discusses the negative effects of overusing technology and being too dependent on devices. It notes that technology is convenient but is slowly taking our lives over. Some negatives highlighted include declining health rates, increasing obesity, and kids spending more time on devices than reading or outdoor activities. However, the document recommends not stopping technology cold turkey but making time to unplug and exploring the real world in order to prevent the negative effects of overusing technology.
The document discusses women's history of contributions to computer programming and technology as original innovators, but how barriers like biases, lack of access, and gatekeeping have prevented greater participation and representation of women over time. It highlights women like Ada Lovelace, the first computer programmer, and keypunch operators, while noting ongoing issues like underrepresentation in funding and technical fields being designed around male experiences and perspectives. The need for diversity, inclusion, and creating opportunities is emphasized.

The document discusses improving retrospective meetings. It describes common problems that cause retrospectives to be ineffective such as lack of preparation, poor facilitation, and no follow up on action items. Several techniques are presented for facilitating different parts of the retrospective process including gathering data, generating insights, and deciding on an action plan. The document emphasizes the importance of strong facilitation, having a clear purpose and structure with variety, and ensuring any agreed upon action items from the retrospective are followed up on.
This document discusses the importance of sharing and accountability in professional learning communities. It argues that sharing allows educators to connect with each other and learn from one another. When educators share their work openly online, it fosters collaboration, reflection on teaching practices, and continuous learning and improvement. However, oversharing can also bring risks, so educators must find the right balance of autonomy, connections, and transparency that works for their situation. Overall, creating a culture of trust and open sharing holds educators mutually accountable in a natural way.
This document discusses leveraging technology to engage students in learning. It emphasizes that the goal is not just integrating technology for its own sake or "fixing" curriculum, but seeing opportunities with a fresh perspective and "lighting up learners". True engagement involves immersion, deeper understanding, better retention and successful application of knowledge. The document explores what motivates and engages learners through authentic tasks, choice, collaboration and allowing some risk-taking. While technology is not the goal, it can enhance engagement by allowing global collaboration and accessing current information.

The document summarizes a presentation on cross-channel design given by Jess McMullin and Samantha Starmer. The presentation covered what cross-channel design is, why organizations should care about it, how to sell the need for it within an organization, using a case study and field research experience to discover touchpoints across channels, and various tools and methods for designing cross-channel solutions such as journey mapping, touchpoint matrices, and paper prototyping.
The document summarizes a presentation given by Jess McMullin and Samantha Starmer titled "Beyond Digital: Designing for a Cross Channel Future" at the ASIS&T Information Architecture Summit 2011 in Denver, Colorado. The presentation discussed the importance of designing customer experiences across digital and physical channels, provided a case study example, and outlined various tools and methods for cross-channel design discovery and solution development, such as journey mapping, touchpoint matrices, paper prototyping, and service blueprints. Tips were also shared on how to start implementing cross-channel design within an organization.
The document summarizes Dean Shareski's presentation at the EIPS2011 conference on rethinking learning. The presentation focused on 3 principles: 1) students own their learning, 2) audiences may disagree with some ideas presented but should think critically, and 3) the goal is to inspire more questions than answers to continue the learning journey. It discusses defining education more broadly and the need to prepare students with skills like problem solving, collaboration and using online resources. The presentation suggests learning will increasingly happen through personal and social connections in a networked world.
The document discusses the power of learning communities and professional learning networks (PLNs) for educators. It provides examples of digital tools and strategies for educators to connect, collaborate, share resources and knowledge, learn from others, and develop professionally. These include using blogs, Twitter, RSS feeds, Google Reader, Diigo, Ning, and wikis to expand one's network, find reliable information sources, and contribute to collective knowledge. This document discusses leveraging technology for student engagement in learning. It emphasizes that the focus should be on instructional design rather than just integrating technology for its own sake. Effective engagement comes from providing students with choice, novelty, authentic tasks that allow them to create content and learn in a way that connects to the real world. When combined with digital tools, this can help students feel motivated and immersed in their learning through a sense of autonomy, mastery, and purpose.
The document discusses how traditional education systems do not engage digital learners and presents a digital toolkit to better integrate technology and improve learning. It advocates using tools like blogs, RSS feeds, and social media alongside pedagogical approaches to build knowledge through connections. The toolkit provides examples of tools, guidance on tool classification and use, and emphasizes building a community of experts, including students, to effectively incorporate new technologies.
To survive as a company, the organization needs to become a shapeshifter: sometimes hierarchical, sometimes networked; sometimes efficient, sometimes effective; sometimes great at execution, and other times great at innovation. You can only achieve this by motivating people to change continuously. To achieve this, we take a closer look at gamification and habit-forming. Description of Talk:
Do you want to write great User Stories (a.k.a. small features that are part of a product) that provide the vehicle for conversation and confirmation that we build the right thing? Do you struggle with completing stories (of business value) that are potentially shippable within a fraction of an iteration/sprint? During this session we will do a quick refresher on User Story formatting to include Acceptance Criteria. The reason for the refresher is that over the last few years, despite people using User Stories, I have experienced their usage far from the intended purpose.
After the refresher, we will learn at least 3 techniques for splitting stories in this interactive workshop.

Looking forwards, this talk will argue that UX must resist hype, say no more often and collaborate less often (you read that right), and become a true profession in order to be able to design a better world.

Developer Experience is Dead! Long Live Developer Experience!
In this keynote-style session, well take a detailed, granular look at the barriers to productivity developers face today and modern approaches for removing them. 10x developers may be a myth, but 10x organizations are very real, as proven by the influential study performed in the 1980s, The Coding War Games.
Right now, here in early 2025, we seem to be experiencing YAPP (Yet Another Productivity Philosophy), and that philosophy is converging on developer experience. It seems that with every new method, we invent to deliver products, whether physical or virtual, we reinvent productivity philosophies to go alongside them.
But which of these approaches works? DORA? SPACE? DevEx? What should we invest in and create urgency behind today so we dont have the same discussion again in a decade?
