DISSOCIATIVE IDENTITY DISORDER
IN THE GIFTED (THAI SERIES)
PSYCHOLOGY BASIS
Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), previously known as Multiple
Personality Disorder, is a mental disorder characterized by the presence of
two or more distinct or split identities or personality states that continually
have power over the person's behavior.
The dissociative aspect is thought to be a coping mechanism --
the person literally dissociates himself from a situation or
experience that's too violent, traumatic, or painful to assimilate
with his conscious self.
With dissociative identity disorder, there's also an inability to
recall key personal information that is too far-reaching to be
explained as mere forgetfulness.
Dissociative Identity Disorder can include symptoms such as:
 Depression
 Mood swings
 Suicidal tendencies
Sleep disorders (insomnia, night terrors, and sleep
walking)
Anxiety, panic attacks, and phobias (flashbacks,
reactions to stimuli or "triggers")
 Alcohol and drug abuse
 Compulsions and rituals
 Psychotic-like symptoms (including auditory and
visual hallucinations)
MEDIA BASIS
The Gifted program starts for students with a placement
test. Once the students are introduced into the
program, they have a potential and it is ultimately up to
them to find it out, with the help of the teacher and
materials around them. The show walks the viewer
through the life of each of the students while also
staying on the plot line. There are 10 Gifted Students at
Ritdha High School, but there are three students we will
focus on, and the teacher. Each of the photos manifest
a hint about their potentials.
Punn, the main character in this
presentation, is the student who
suffers from Dissociative Identity
Disorder. He can imitate or copy a
skill by watching or studying and by
this ability, he was able to develop
four more different personalities:
first, the leader; second, the
paranoid; third, the rage; and fourth,
the dark one - usually shows up when
the rest of the personalities fight or
debate each other. Punn's condition
falls under the category of Multiple-
Personality Disorder. His gift is
associated of his being perfectionist,
Wave, is the student who is first
perceived as the antagonist in
the series due to his cold nature,
but in fact, is not the antagonist.
He is techno-path, or able to
control electronic machines
through contact; a gift
associated on his skill on
mathematics and computers. His
potential evolve as he can also
heal from his wounds fast and
can hack every electronic
devices. He is the first to
Claire is the social butterfly of the program
and is also Punns love interest. She has
synesthesia, a kind of neuropsychological
phenomena wherein she can see a person's
aura and base on the color being projected by
it, will be interpreted into a certain kind of
emotion (e.g., blue aura for sadness; violet
aura for guilt or fear; pink aura for joy; red
aura for anger; etc.). Her gift is associated on
her passion for acting - an art that requires
skill on conveying different emotions. Her
eyes hurt when she use her potential too
much, which limits her in using her ability on
its full extent. She was unsure of Punn's
feelings towards her due to Punn's multiple
personalities. As a result, she sees all the
Mr. Pom, the teacher of the
current Gifted Program, was
one of the first Gifted
Students. His potential is to
erase memories by conducting
a hypnosis with the use of
metronome and by snapping
his fingers, he puts the person
on deep slumber. He touches
the head of the person as it is
sleeping and will start to erase
selected memories. His gift is
associated on his ability to
CONNECTION

basis segment*
Mr. Pom notices Punns strange
behavior so he got to the bottom
of it. He asked Punn to paint. Punn
turned in five different paintings,
each of a tree that represents him,
without realizing. This connects to
the inability to recall information
that goes beyond normal
forgetfulness.
The first
painting
represents
Punns normal
self when his
different
personalities are
not at large.
The second painting
represents Punns
most prominent
personality, the
leader. As the leader
he is firm and strives
to be perfect, and is
ready to shoulder the
burden of high
expectations. That
personality is what
he chooses to show
to others.
The third painting
represents a
personality lead by
paranoia. He has
high levels of anxiety
and feels unsafe. He
often feels like
theres always
The fourth
painting
represents a
personality
driven by rage.
It makes Punn
violent and
dare to take
The last painting
represents the dark
personality, the most
dangerous. It
threatens and
overpowers all of the
other personalities
and can make Punn
do things he
wouldnt normally
do.
Due to his perfectionist nature, Punn is entered in an academic competition, in every single
event. Punn is already stressed from the events prior, and got into an altercation with Claire at
lunch because she withdrew from an event on Punns behalf. Even though he is not entered in
the event, Wave is observing it. At this point, Punns paranoia personality is showing. Punn
answers a questions, then Wave answers the question with a more accurate answer. When
asked why he didnt answer the event, Wave sarcastically answers, Because Punn is probably
smarter than me. This is the start to a trigger, or reaction to stimuli (negative in this case), as
mentioned in the symptoms of DID. This causes the rage personality to show and Punn ends
up kicking Wave onto the ground from his chair. Punns friend punches Punn in an attempt to
get him to snap out of it, but it only makes it worse. Punn beats up his friend and Claire walks
in and is able to temporarily calm Punn down. Both are taken to the infirmary for evaluation.
Outside of the infirmary, Claire talks with Mr. Pom about ways to help Punn, she is advised to
try and understand him, as he may understand himself in the process. During the
conversation, Punn escapes through a window and enters an empty classroom and sits at a
piano, where he then zones out where he will have a physical, visual, and auditory
hallucination. The three personalities, the leader, the paranoid, and rage are fighting with each
other. The dark personality enters the room and silences the other personalities. This
personality exhibits self destructive thinking and behavior. The dark personality punches the
leader, which in turn knocks down all the others, including actual Punn himself. Anything the
dark personality does, Punn is physically doing himself. The dark personality is telling Punn he
should end it, and then starts choking Punn. The dark personality lets go, and walks to the
other side of the room to find a boxcutter. At this point Claire found the dark personality
about to make Punn slit his own throat. Claire reinforces Punn and eventually gets the leader
My Opinion
The writers and creators did a good job
finding adequate research about Dissociative
Identity Disorder. They displayed it in a way
that viewers with little or no knowledge about
the subject could understand, while still
keeping the plot line interesting.
I feel like this show and the stories it holds
include a lot of psychology, so research was
thorough and accurate.
 In conclusion, great connections between
the disorder and the show.
