This document provides steps for creating digital social stories in PowerPoint to teach target behaviors to children:
1) Determine the target behavior and create a title slide naming it.
2) Write the story script from the child's perspective across several slides, keeping each slide simple with 1-2 sentences.
3) Add images to the story slides, using pictures of real people, objects, or appropriate clipart to match the text.

1. Steps to Creating Digital Social Stories in Power Point:
1) First determine the target behavior that the story will focus on. For
instance, will this be a story about using the bathroom, going to the grocery
store, visiting grandma and grandpa etc.
2) Open up Power Point. Your first slide will be your title slide naming the
target behavior.
Select a slide layout with text, or start with a blank slide and insert a text
box. You might also want to insert a suitable picture as well. You can
arrange the text or picture as you would like. You can also change the
background as you would like by selecting background styles or any of the
designs shown above. For the social stories I would suggest a more neutral
background.
When formatting is finished, move to the next slide.
2. 3) The next several slides will show the story script. It is important to write the
story from the perspective of the child. Keep the wording on each slide
simple and relatively short, no more than two sentences.
4) Within the slides with the text, you will also want to add images. It is best
to use pictures of real people or objects in the child¡¯s life. If those are not
available, do a google images search to look for appropriate pictures to
match the text. (For privacy reasons, I chose to use clipart.)
4. 5) In Power Point, one can also add audio to the slides.
You can view your slideshow by selecting the From Beginning button. You can adjust the timing of your
slideshow by selecting Set Up ºÝºÝߣshow.
5. This instructional tutorial exhibits the segmenting principle in two ways. First, the idea behind digital
social stories is to present the steps of a chosen behavior to a specific child in segments, or broken down
in a way that the child will have time to process and understand each step. Also, the tutorial is broken
down into separate steps so that someone wanting to know how to make a digital social story using
Power Point would know what to do first, second, third and so on. In both cases, a more complex idea is
broken down into segments.
