Approaches and Methods
The Type Study Method
- The type study method is, in a reality, an inductive procedure except that only one case is studied.
But this case must be typical or representative of whatever it represents.
- For example, if students were to study the parts of the river system, it is not necessary to study many
river systems. Just one sufficient, but it must be representative of other rivers and must have all
part5s of a river system. Thus, the Pasig River would be typical or representative of the other rivers,
since it has a source, a mouth, tributary streams, and so on.
The steps of Type Study Method are:
1. Selection of the topic as a type to be studied- the selection of a typical case is crucial in the type of
study method. The case or topic must be representative of the group.it is the typical or average rather
than the exception that is needed.
2. Apperception and Motivation
3. Statement of a typical case
4. Study details
5. Comparing Details with model
6. Generalization
The Expository Method
- Expository means telling, explaining or interpreting. The expository method is used a great deal in
the lower grades, as there is much that needs explaining `
Expository Method consists of Three (3) steps:
1. Approach- the proper mind set may be established by recall of past experiences related to the present
lessons. The points to be explained must ne placed before the class.
2. Presentation- While explaining, it might be well for the teacher to make use of the following
principles:
a. Relate the new to previous experiences.
b. Teacher and class should have the same viewpoints of frame of reference regarding what is to be
explained.
c. Exposition means not only explaining but also interpreting.
d. Material should be organized so as to permit thinking.
e. To make explanation clear and effective, devices such as the following may be used: (1) analogies
and stories, (2) illustrations, (3) models, (4) diagrams, (5) demonstrations, and (6) outlines and
summaries to set facts in proper relationship.
3. Application- this step will show whether or not the students understood the explanation. It may be
implemented in the form of a test, creative work, or some other activities.
