Interviews found most physical chemists struggle with poor note-taking and difficulty finding past work. While some use basic data management tools, dedicated ELNs remain uncommon. Researchers saw benefits but also challenges. To be useful, an ELN would need to be affordable, have flexible access, effective interfaces for recording narratives and data, and features like drawing and linking files. Barriers to adoption include costs, infrastructure needs, and changing existing practices. Overall, researchers were open to ELNs but current options have not fully met their needs and requirements.
