An engineer's notebook is used to formally document all work related to a design project in chronological order. Engineers are required to record ideas, sketches, research findings, and meeting details by hand in a bound notebook with sequentially numbered pages. Proper standards for engineer's notebooks include signing and dating each page, having a witness verify entries, and storing the notebook safely when not in use.

What is an Engineer’s Notebook? An engineer’s notebook is a book in which an engineer will formally document, in chronological order, all work that is associated with a specific design project. Each engineer has an engineer’s notebook. Engineers record all related project work by hand.
An engineer’s notebook records… Written ideas Sketches (preferably annotated) Work session summaries Research findings Interview information: who was contacted, when, and what was discussed or learned
Bound quadrille-lined (grid) pages Individually labeled page #s Location for designer’s signature and date Location for witness signature and date Locations for identifying contents as continued from and to another page Statement of the proprietary nature of the notebook Standard Page Layout
Engineer’s Notebook Standards 3. No pages are removed from the Engineer’s notebook for any reason. 1. Pages are sequentially numbered in ink on the top outside edge. 2.   2. We are not looking for artists when sketching, just proper detail of the thought or idea.
  3. Note: Explain to the students where the information will go based on the notebook you are using.
