European artists in the 18th century brought new styles of visual art to India under British rule, including techniques like oil painting that enabled realistic depictions. Two popular traditions were picturesque landscape painting that depicted India's scenery for British audiences, and portrait painting of the wealthy and powerful. A third genre called "history painting" dramatized episodes of British imperial history. Meanwhile, local court artists adapted to the new styles while some rulers like Tipu Sultan resisted and promoted traditional miniature painting. In the 19th century, popular art forms like scroll painting emerged in cities and pilgrimage centers. Later artists sought a visual style that was both modern and distinctly Indian.

and Puranas have received profound acclaim. He was part of the royal
family of erstwhile Parappanad, Malappuram district.

WOMAN HOLDING A FRUIT
'Woman Holding a Fruit' shows Ravi Varma's mastery over the
idioms of a new visual language in India. In the naturalistic depiction
of the young woman, Ravi Varma lyrically combines eroticism with
innocence. His handling of colours mostly soft pinks and browns
heightens the tenderness evoked in this painting.

JAMINI ROY
Jamini Roy was born on 11 April 1887 into a moderately prosperous
Kayastha family of land-owners in Beliatore village of the Bankura district,
West Bengal.[4]
He was raised in an average middle-class, art loving
household which ultimately influenced his future decisions.
When he was sixteen he was sent to study at the
Government College of Art, Kolkata . Abanindranath Tagore, the founder of
Bengal school was vice-principal at the institution.[6]
He was taught to paint
in the prevailing academic tradition drawing Classical nudes and painting in
oils and in 1908 he received his Diploma in Fine Art.
However, the principal E.B. Havell's influence, and Rabindranath Tagore's
decisive lecture brought him to a realization that he needed to draw
inspiration, not from Western traditions, but from his own culture, and so he
looked to the living folk and tribal art for inspiration.[7]
He was most
influenced by the Kalighat Pat (Kalighat painting), which was a style of art
with bold sweeping brush-strokes. He moved away from his earlier
impressionist landscapes and portraits and between 1921 and 1924 began
his first period of experimentation with the Santhal dance as his starting
point. Jamini Roy had 4 sons and 1 daughter.

GOPINI
In Gopini we see a monumentality of the figure. Bent lyrically, the
figure of the dancer emotes a sense of vibrancy and volume, a
striking moment of movement highlighted by the bright and tonally
rich use of colors.
THREE PUJARINS
Jamini Roy was a Bengali artist who made the ever-famous
painting called the Three Pujarins. It represents the traditional
