Jamini Roy was an Indian painter born in 1887 in West Bengal. He studied art in Kolkata under Abanindranath Tagore, a pioneer of the Bengal school of art. Though initially painting in Western styles, Roy realized he wanted to draw from Indian culture. He was influenced by folk art styles like Kalighat paintings, known for bold brushstrokes. Roy experimented with portraying folk themes like Santhal dances between 1921-1924. He received several honors over his career, including the Padma Bhushan award in 1954. Roy is renowned for portraying Indian folk culture and everyday life through vivid, expressive paintings.
