The space shuttle's primary objective is to improve access to space. It is the world's first and only reusable space vehicle, capable of transporting people, materials, and equipment into orbit. The space shuttle consists of an orbiter that carries astronauts and payload in its 60-foot cargo bay, two solid rocket boosters that generate thrust at launch before jettisoning, and an external fuel tank that stores liquid oxygen and hydrogen fuel.
