Dear Mr. Shahelin Naser:
It is my pleasure to offer you a Central Michigan University Graduate Fellowship for the 2013-2014 academic year.
Given that we had a large pool of highly qualified applicants, you should feel very proud of being selected for this
award.
The award is contingent upon you being admitted to the College of Graduate Studies and the graduate program
to which you applied and your maintaining good academic standing (3.0 or higher) as a graduate student, and
completing at least nine hours of graduate credit each semester.
The fellowship includes a stipend of $10,500, and a tuition scholarship for a maximum of 24 credits. The tuition
scholarship can be used during the fall, spring, and summer sessions of the 2013-2014 academic year to pay for
courses on your graduate degree program or ones approved by your graduate advisor. For the 2013-2014 academic
year, credits you choose to take beyond the 24 credits are charged at the resident rate regardless of your residency
status. Unfortunately, the fellowship will not support undergraduate credit or off-campus course work unless
approved by your advisor and me. As a fellowship recipient, you will also get faculty library privileges; this means
you can check books out for six months at a time.
The stipend will be paid in eight equal monthly installments, with the first check in September and the last one in
April. The first check for the Fall semester is issued in mid-September, following verification of your enrollment of
at least nine hours. For international students, monthly stipend payments are taxed at a rate of 14.25%. International
students with a US Social Security number may be eligible for a tax treaty with their country, which would allow
them to not have to pay this tax. Please complete the attached form and when you get to campus take it to the
Payroll Office (Warriner Hall 204) along with your I-94, visa, passport and I-20.
You may charge your books at the University Center Bookstore and have that sum deducted from your fellowship
stipend. If you wish to charge books, please wait until approximately two weeks before the start of classes, when the
financial aid office will send a list of fellowship recipients' names to the bookstore. These charges and other monies
you owe the university (e.g. special fees, health center charges, etc.) will be your responsibility.
Please note: Receipt of a fellowship can impact your ability to receive need-based financial aid (such as
loans). If you have questions about this, please call the financial aid office at (989) 774-3674. In addition, you
should consult a tax expert or the IRS (www.irs.gov) to determine your tax liability for these funds.
