Fiber optics were used to replace a neon lighting system at the Hard Rock Cafe located in Universal Studios, Florida. The fiber optic lighting was designed to highlight the shape of a guitar that surrounds the building and could be seen from the air and ground areas. Small plastic side-emitting fibers were used for the guitar "strings" and "handle" sections, with 11 illuminators and a color wheel providing the light source. Fiber optics were chosen over neon due to issues with neon breaking and requiring more maintenance, and the fibers were better able to mimic the look of guitar strings.
