- 2. INTRODUCTION ? Fiber-optic lighting refers to the use of optical fiber, and its ability to transmit light, for decorative or practical applications. ? Fibers are made to not only transmit light but to glow along the fiber itself, so it resembles a neon light tube. ? When optical fibers are used for illumination, they are sometimes wrapped in bundles, thereby giving them the ability to transmit images as well. ? The optical fiber can be bent around corners or in a spiral shape and still only emit light at the end of the fiber.
- 3. HARD ROCK CAFE ? LOCATION- Universal Studios, Florida PROJECT DESCRIPTION ? The fibre optic application replaced a neon lighting system. ? The aesthetic lighting was designed to be viewed from the air as well as pedestrian and auto areas. ? The shape of the guitar surrounds the building and is highlighted by fibre optic lighting. ? The strings of the guitar are fibres.
- 4. LIGHT SOURCE ? In this project 11 illuminators utilizing 400 watts metal hide lamps are used in the guitar “handle” and “strings” sections of this design. ? FIBRES USED- small plastic side- emitting fibre ACCESSORIES USED ? Colour wheel located in the illuminators. ? The fibres are held in place along the guitar areas by the original neon mounting system. ? The fibres are attached to the “strings” of the guitar by monofilament fishing line.
- 5. REASONS FOR FIBRE OPTICS ? Neon was replaced due to breakage and maintenance problems. ? According to the designer, Robert Laughlin of Robert Laughlin & Associates in Winter park, FL, fibre optic lighting was selected as the appropriate source to “mimic” guitar strings. ? The size, texture, sagging properties, etc. were ideal. ? In addition, the lighting sources were concealed which looks good in daytime and better at night.
