The presentation discusses the role of flavonoids in biological nitrogen fixation (BNF). Flavonoids are polyphenolic plant compounds found in fruits and vegetables that function as antioxidants and regulate auxin transport, UV protection, and defense against pathogens. Specifically, flavonoids in the rhizosphere interact with microorganisms and play a role in symbiosis. Manipulating the flavonoid pathway could improve root-rhizosphere interactions and BNF, but their multiple functions require caution when attempting to alter rhizosphere signals.
