Future of television
Magnus Hansson | SwarmPlanet
Television are
experiencing the biggest
change since ever.
Tomorrow¡¯s television
? Why
? When
? How much
? What type
First,
WHY do we watch
television?
There¡¯s 6 fundamental
needs to satisfy..
Satisfy the need of..
To unwind
To connect
For comfort

For experience
To escape
To indulge
A bit deeper
Unwind: defer life¡¯s chores or de-stress from the pressures of the day.
Comfort: shared family time; togetherness, rituals, familiarity and
routine.
Connect: a sense of ¡®plugging in ¨C to feel a sense of connection to
society, to time or to place.
Experience: a need for fun and a sense of occasion to be shared.
Escape: the desire to be taken on an enjoyable journey to another time
and place.
Indulge: satisfying your (typically guilty) pleasures with personal
favorites, usually alone.
What psychological need
are the most important?
Entertain
What do we watch?
About 20 % of the top 100
shows in a week are News
Bulletins.
News, Sports, Weather and
some entertainment shows are
being watched genuinely ¡±live¡±.
Drama are better watched as
VOD.

More then 50% of the times
when consumers are watching
Live television it¡¯s in companion
with someone else .In the case
of VOD, the number is 30%,
The reason for watching live
television when consumers are
together is that it¡¯s negotiated
experience, not so much
shared experience.
So, will it be Live or VOD?
The answer is..
¡°Live TV is our daily food whereas VOD is more like a box of chocolates.¡±
!

¡°Live TV is best equipped to meet all of the needs and that is why it will endure, no matter
what new platforms emerge,¡±
!

Even among the heavy VOD viewers in the research sample, 60% typically checked what
was on the live TV schedule first before considering other options.
?
- Neil Mortensen, the research and planning director of Thinkbox.
What about mobile
streaming, is there a
difference?
Mobile users in the US and Europe are
more likely to stream user generated
videos, while tablet users stream more TV
shows, according to new research looking
into the media habits of people on the
move.
!
ThinkBox 2013
Where do we stream?
About 80% of all tablet users consume most of their streaming video at home,
while only about 15% consume the majority of their video while commuting to
work.
About 50% of all mobile phone users consume most of their streaming video at
home and 35% while commuting to work.?

ThinkBox 2013

!
What do people think?
Less than 20% of all mobile users rate the visual quality of
their streaming video as excellent. Moreover, the majority note
features such as quick loading and smooth playback as the
most important when watching streaming video. In addition, one
of the most desired features requested by consumers was the
ability to pause video and then resume play later on the same
or a different device. ?
?

- Rovi research 2013
Some more words/facts
2,105,441: streaming video viewers needed to beat last year's record set by NBC's
live-streaming Super Bowl coverage, the first time the Super Bowl was offered live via
streaming video. - Mashable?
IN USA FOX¡¯s live broadcast of the 2013 UEFA Champions Final between Bayern
Munich and Borussia Dortmund averaged a 0.9/2 rating with 1.4 million viewers on
Saturday, May 25, 2013 - Soccer world?
Globally, consumer Internet video traffic will be 69 percent of all consumer Internet
traffic in 2017, up from?57 percent in 2012. This percentage does not include video
exchanged through peer-to-peer (P2P) file?sharing. The sum of all forms of video (TV,
video on demand [VoD], Internet, and P2P) will be in the range of?80?to 90 percent
of?global consumer traffic by 2017. - Cisco May 2013
In fact total traffic volumes in 2012 alone exceed all the previous years combined
and globally data is projected to grow by 66% p.a. through 2017 to 11.2
Exabytes per month ¨C equivalent to more than 5 billion hours of hd video/month.
Data continues to be a major area of growth for mobile operators. As Cisco
reported in their recent visual networking index (vni) study, the volume of mobile
broadband (MBB) traffic has been doubling every year, reaching 1,577
Petabytes per month in 2013 (the equivalent of 500 billion .mp3 files or 800
million hours of streaming hd video) and is forecast to reach 11,156 Petabytes
by 2017.
The iPlayer, a Flash app which delivers full-length streaming video of BBC
programs, has resulted in a huge increase in streaming bandwidth for British
ISPs since its introduction (of full length shows) in December. Early reports found
that costs for streaming video had tripled at one provider, raising concerns that
the iPlayer¡¯s popularity would break the business models of ISPs
