Writers whose work we will be reading include: William Shakespeare Robert Browning Mary Shelley Joseph Conrad  Oscar Wilde H.G. Wells Lewis Carrol George Orwell Virginia Woolf Aldus Huxley Alan Moore Grant Morrison  Nick Hornby
A selection of modern British films will also be viewed!
By the end of the school year, students should be able to... ANALYZE -油  Whether it is reading text or viewing a film,   students should be able to dig past the surface of simply comprehending the plot. Instead, they will key in on sub-text by way of characterization and symbolism. VERBALIZE -  It is essential that students are able to turn their thoughts into a dialogue with the rest of the class. Open and respectful discussion is essential in gaining an understanding of the material. In good literature, there are no easy answers! WRITE, WRITE, WRITE -  Writing papers can be a daunting task for any student. This course should leave students with the strategies needed to put their ideas and arguments onto paper in a well thought out and scholarly fashion. Writing can be painful, but having written is joyous!
Special Points of Interest Students will be able to understand and appreciate literary works of art, and how to spot the "junk food" books! They will realize that,  YES , the issues raised in the material still pertain to us and our society!  Psychology and Sociology will be heavily emphasized. It's important to explore all sides of humanity, good and bad. JUNK FOOD!!!
PODCAST PROJECT It is important that students are able to reflect on what they have been discovering about the material, the world, and themselves. For that reason, every  two weeks  students will record a podcast in which they will express their thoughts and opinions on the material covered in the past two weeks as well as the classroom discussion that accompanied it.  Each podcast will be uploaded onto the class website and students will be assigned to listen and respond to three classmates' podcasts on rotating basis.
Technology and 21st Century Skills Dramatization of 21st Century Skills Flying around in space not a guarantee!  Even in a literature class, emerging technologies cannot,  and should not , be avoided! It is vital that students learn to use all the digital tools at their disposal in order to effectively communicate with not just their friends, but the whole world! The podcast project is just one example of this... there will be others!油
NJ schools are committed to implementing technology in their classrooms! An example of a NJ Technology Standard seen in the Podcast Project: 8.1.12.B.1 -  The use of digital tools and media-rich resources enhances creativity and the construction of knowledge.
