To use NVIS successfully, the antenna must radiate signals at a high angle and the correct frequency band must be chosen, which is typically 10% below the critical frequency of the F2 ionospheric layer, depending on the time of day, year, and solar cycle. Common antenna choices are dipoles lowered to around 1/4 wavelength high.

Hiroshi Sugimoto had a vision of photographing an entire movie in a single frame. To realize this vision, he secretly brought a large-format camera into a cheap cinema and left the shutter open for the entire two hour movie. After developing the film, his vision "exploded behind his eyes" as he had captured the entire movie in a single frame with intermittent flashes of light and darkness. Sugimoto feels a sense of security and calmness when viewing the sea, as if returning to his ancestral home.
