Give Your Smile the VIP Treatment"
(Part 4)

則р In high school, I studied math and science. I was an all-A student, graduated

with Honors and even won scholarships to fund my undergraduate studies. I
attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and maintained an above
3.0 GPA. My major was in psychology instead of science. I applied for
Dental School and decided to move out of Michigan to Baltimore to attend
the University of Maryland Dental School!

則р For the first time, I felt like I wasnt the smartest. The first two years of dental

school were tough for me because I didnt have as much science background
as my fellow classmates who had majored in science during their undergrad
studies. My decision to study Psychology was biting me in the butt! The
workload and information was a bit overwhelming for me and, for the first
time, I was failing and didnt think that I could achieve this dream of mine;
this burning goal to become a dentist.

則р In addition to my own insecurities, I had a boyfriend at the time, as well

as classmates, who verbally expressed that they thought that I was
dumb as a result of my periodic failures during my first two years of
dental school. This really didnt help my self-esteem any. All I knew was
that I had to get out of this academic slump and prove everyone wrong;
prove that I was born to be a dentist!
則р But something changed during my third year. I started treating patients in

the dental clinic and my light began to shine. I excelled in the dental
clinic! I stayed late and came to clinic early to hone my skills. Whereas
just a year earlier I had been an underachiever, now I became a superstar
student, getting excellent grades and patients loved me!

(Part 4)

則р I got my confidence back and I knew that I was going to make it to

the finish line and win. I did so well that year that I finished my
requirements early and was able to do specialty assignments that
other students werent privileged to do. In addition, my senior year
presentation titled HIV in Midlife and Elderly Patients, which
was required for graduation, won several awards!
則р After eight years of college studies and finally reaching my goal, I

decided to go and have some fun for a change in New York City,
where I would be completing a year of hospital training in
dentistry to get more experience.
Give Your Smile the VIP Treatment"
(Part 4)

則р That year not only did I hone my craft in my chosen profession but I had

the time of my LIFE! New York was THE place to be in the late 90s!
Comedy clubs were packed, Hip Hop was in its golden years, and the
dance clubs were unbelievable. Not to mention the opening of P. Diddys
new restaurant, Justins. This was where, on any given Tuesday, you
could run into celebrities like Mariah Carey, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliot,
New York Knicks players and, of course, P. Diddy himself!
則р Well, the light bulb began to burn bright in my head. Thinking about that

young 12 year old girl that could work her way into concerts and meet
celebs, I got an ah ha idea: Im going to become the dentist to the stars
in New York City!
Give Your Smile the VIP Treatment"
(Part 4)

則р What a crazy idea, right? I wasnt from New York City, I didnt know

very many people, my family was back in Michigan and I had no support
system in NY, and most importantly I HAD NO MONEY! Oh yeah, I
was a young 28-year-old black woman in a mans world. Lets face it;
dentistry is a field that is dominated by older, white men. Would people
really support me as a dentist in The Big Apple? Could I REALLY get
celebs to come to me?

則р 11 years later... the answer is YES!!!!!!
則р Speaking of celebrities, Ill have you know that lots of famous TV, movie,

music and hip-hop stars have had experiences just like mine. (And, Im
thinking, maybe a lot like yours as well.)
Give Your Smile the VIP Treatment"
(Part 4)

則р Rapper Kanye West used to get teased all the time in school about his

appearance. As he writes in his autobiography, Thank You and Youre
Welcome, My entire family used to tell me, You dont need to get your
teeth fixed, theyre fine, but the kids in the lunchroom would say Your
teeth are big and white just like a horse!

則р So I got braces and had to have eight teeth removed. Imagine [how]

crowded my teeth must have been. After that I was teased for having
braces. Once my teeth were fixed, everybody (including some of the same
people who said I didnt need them) said, Your teeth look so much
better! So now, when I see people with messed-up teeth, I want to be that
one person who tells them the truth like the kids told me, Your teeth are
big and white like a horse!
Give Your Smile the VIP Treatment"
(Part 4)

則р Children can be cruel, but no crueler than a young girl might be to

herself when staring back at a reflection that had caused her so
much pain over the years. Learning to smile again was a rebirth of
sorts and I graduated with a new sense of confidence, strength
and, most of all, a new sense of purpose.
