- 4. Scenario 1 You’ve dropped your door keys; they are out of reach and there is no one around to help. It’s a cold wet day and all you want to do is get home. Being in a wheelchair can stop you doing even the simplest of things.
- 5. Scenario 2 Dog for the hard of hearing Instead of barking, the dogs alert the deaf person by touch, using a paw to gain attention and then leading them back to the sound source. For sounds such as the smoke alarm and fire bell, the dogs alert then lie down to indicate danger.
- 6. What do they do? They collect the post rather than attack the postman! They load and unload the washing machine. (Yes, really!) They can open doors They can interrupt a child’s tantrum They can stop a child from running into the road They can press the button on a pedestrian crossing
- 7. Charities Abilities Dogs for Young People Based on Isle of Wight Place Labrador puppies with volunteer families until full training can begin. Dogs are matched to the individual Part funded by Sport Relief/ Donations Medical Detection Dogs 3 types – Medical alert, Cancer Detection & Bio-detection. Uk Wide charity. Place dogs such as Springer Spaniels and Labradors with individuals after training is completed.

- #8: there are over 26 thousand people with limiting long-term illness or disability on the Isle of wight, 700 of whom are under 24 years.Each dog is carefully matched and trained to meet a specific need. In terms of filming access the Founder of the charity Carol Court has said she will b more than happy to accommodate all our filming requests so far including puppy training classes, interviews and various everyday filming opportunities with 1 - 2 individuals who either have received their dog or will be receiving their dog soon, Interviews with herself as a representative from the charity. Medical alert – Things like diabeites – taught to notice the odor changes when a persons glucose levels drop. Dog will then fetch any emergency medication or equipment needed for their owner preventing a medical emergency. Bio – help people with severe alergies like dust mites and help prevent them from having a reaction to bites by using their scense of smell to detect any infected areas. Cancer detection – still in early development but being used to detect hard to diagnose cancers such as prostate in the early stages through sense of smell. A form of screening.
- #9: Georgie is a male labrador who joined ability dogs for young people in may 2012 as their first puppy. He will potentially be one of our Hero Hounds . He has been paired with a 17 year old called Christina who has cerebral palsy. In the Easter Holidays, Georgie will be going to live with Christina for the first time. Christina is also doing a sky dive on the 6th of April for the charity and this would also be another possible filming option.
- #10: Roots, a Working Cocker Spaniel has become the first Medical Alert Assistance Dog to alert two type 1 diabetics to dangerous drops in their blood sugar levels.?Neil Downing, and his son Jack, are the first people to share a Medical Alert Assistance Dog. Roots has been specially trained to sniff out drops in Neil and Jack’s blood sugar, long before they begin to experience any ill effects, so they can treat themselves before their condition escalates to a medical emergency.??Both Neil and Jack were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when they were just two years old and have been relying on Neil’s wife, Sarah, to spot the signs of an oncoming hypo.??“We have always tried our best not to let diabetes stop us doing anything, but we’ve always had to be careful as we are not always aware when we are getting low blood sugar” says Neil. “This has always been particularly hard on Sarah as she is constantly on alert. She is very good at spotting the signs but it is hard work when there are two of us.”??It is harder for Jack to control his diabetes because of his age, going to a friend’s house for tea is very difficult and sleepovers are out of the question.Roots divides his working day between Neil and Jack, he sometimes goes to work with Neil or spends the day at home with Sarah.??Before Roots moved in with the Downings, Neil and Jack could collapse with very little warning. Sometimes Sarah would go downstairs in the night, wondering why the TV was on so late, to find Neil unconscious on the sofa.??Neil says, “Now Roots is around there are no dramatic stories of Jack or myself collapsing. He now goes and gets our testing kits and gives them to whoever is low. Sarah is less stressed now when Jack and I go out together because she knows we have Roots as a safety net.”

The Reggie Yates Programme is part of a 3 episode series where as the EDL programme is a stand alone show.
