- 2. Problem Statement Dr X is a passionate and experienced senior lecturer and co-ordinator of the xxx language program, and has been teaching at xxx University for over 20 years. He needs a way to find common ground with his students, and engage with them more on a personal level. This is because although he is putting in time and effort into teaching, he cannot relate to his students, making it difficult to understand and cater for their needs and wants.

Implement a personal learning plan for each student Create relevant personality tests/ quizzes Regular meetings with other teachers to discuss teaching techniques Mentor programs - 1st year and 3rd year buddy system Culture & Cooking event (each student to represent their own cultural background) Bonding events outside of the uni/classroom Excursions Share personal experiences and achievements with students. Let students know who you are! Mutually establish and agree on the best way to communicate/exchange info Incorporate more group work in the course Go on an overseas trip with students Create a common room/hub on campus for students Allocate more time to teaching and less to personal research Have guest speakers from the xxx industry come visit the class Restructure the exchange program to the 2nd year and not the final year Invite students over for a BBQ Get students to write a letter to themselves (reflect and set goals) at the beginning of the course Manage workload differently. Eg. 1 week committed entirely to teaching and no research Comic-Con :) Have more ice- breakers/fun activities throughout the class Form a facebook/twitter/ social media group and get discussions going Allow students to decide on learning/conversation topics Teach in different environments, not just the classroom. Eg. Cafes or outside on the lawn Reconfigure classroom layout into a more casual setting Praise the students more! Celebrate the little things Form a student club just for xxx language students Offer outside of class consultation hours for students Advertise external networking/ career events in a fun and interesting way (not just emails) Give each student tailored homework Have an anonymous letter system - students can address concerns which will remain anon Conduct additional classes specifically for career advice Organise penpals with other students in xxx (country) More thorough student selection process. Eg. interview Treat them to dinner Meet all prospective students and build a rapport with them prior to starting uni Organise and attend weekly events related to the Language First year boot camp Conduct regular individual meetings to track the progress of each student Get feedback from students on current teaching style/course More interactive, hands on activities in the classroom Casual conversation (language) classes at the tav on Fridays Initiate a student of the week program, and reward them with special privileges Re-introduce a career focused unit after their 1 year of exchange Allocate last 10 min of each class to PLAYTIME Get students to share a piece of news they found interesting at the start of each class Meet their family and friends Form a language teachers support network Cooking classes! Bond over food. Volunteer work in xxxx (country) Make friends with people who are in the same age group as the students
- 4. The most practical idea Conduct regular individual meetings to track the progress of each student. Often when students transition from high school to university, they notice a lack of personalisation between student and teacher, due to the mass number of students enrolled at the institute. This detached feeling makes it difficult for students to approach or relate to their teachers. By getting Dr X to conduct regular individual meetings with each student, they will feel not only valued as an individual, but comfortable enough to approach Dr X with any issues or advice in the future.
- 5. The most disruptive idea Go on an overseas trip with students Barriers are always broken down once you travel with someone. You experience the same culture shocks, the same ups and downs, and generally this environment allows plenty of opportunities to get to know one another on a more personal level. By going on a cultural adventure with his students, Dr X will understand more about his students¡¯ passions, interests and future plans.
- 6. My favourite idea Teach in different environments, not just the classroom. Eg. Cafes or outside on the lawn Dr X¡¯s current classroom setting is very conventional and stagnant. It reinforces the one-way learning system where a student passively sits and listens to the teacher standing at the front of the room. By changing the learning environment to a more engaging and unconventional setting, Dr X will have opportunity to break down any barriers between him and his students. It will cultivate a better sense of trust, openness and fun.
