Problem Statement
Dr X is a passionate and experienced senior lecturer and
co-ordinator of the xxx language program, and has been teaching
at xxx University for over 20 years.
He needs a way to find common ground with his students, and
engage with them more on a personal level.
This is because although he is putting in time and effort into
teaching, he cannot relate to his students, making it difficult to
understand and cater for their needs and wants.
Dr X needs a way to find common
ground with his students, and engage

Implement a personal

Regular meetings with
other teachers to discuss

The most practical idea
Conduct regular individual meetings
to track the progress of each student.
Often when students transition from high school to university, they notice a lack of
personalisation between student and teacher, due to the mass number of students
enrolled at the institute. This detached feeling makes it difficult for students to
approach or relate to their teachers. By getting Dr X to conduct regular individual
meetings with each student, they will feel not only valued as an individual, but
comfortable enough to approach Dr X with any issues or advice in the future.
The most disruptive idea
Go on an overseas trip with students
Barriers are always broken down once you travel with someone. You experience
the same culture shocks, the same ups and downs, and generally this
environment allows plenty of opportunities to get to know one another on a
more personal level. By going on a cultural adventure with his students, Dr X will
understand more about his students¡¯ passions, interests and future plans.
My favourite idea
Teach in different environments, not just the classroom.
Eg. Cafes or outside on the lawn
Dr X¡¯s current classroom setting is very conventional and stagnant.
It reinforces the one-way learning system where a student passively sits and
listens to the teacher standing at the front of the room. By changing the learning
environment to a more engaging and unconventional setting, Dr X will have
opportunity to break down any barriers between him and his students. It will
cultivate a better sense of trust, openness and fun.

  • 4. The most practical idea Conduct regular individual meetings to track the progress of each student. Often when students transition from high school to university, they notice a lack of personalisation between student and teacher, due to the mass number of students enrolled at the institute. This detached feeling makes it difficult for students to approach or relate to their teachers. By getting Dr X to conduct regular individual meetings with each student, they will feel not only valued as an individual, but comfortable enough to approach Dr X with any issues or advice in the future.
  • 5. The most disruptive idea Go on an overseas trip with students Barriers are always broken down once you travel with someone. You experience the same culture shocks, the same ups and downs, and generally this environment allows plenty of opportunities to get to know one another on a more personal level. By going on a cultural adventure with his students, Dr X will understand more about his students¡¯ passions, interests and future plans.
  • 6. My favourite idea Teach in different environments, not just the classroom. Eg. Cafes or outside on the lawn Dr X¡¯s current classroom setting is very conventional and stagnant. It reinforces the one-way learning system where a student passively sits and listens to the teacher standing at the front of the room. By changing the learning environment to a more engaging and unconventional setting, Dr X will have opportunity to break down any barriers between him and his students. It will cultivate a better sense of trust, openness and fun.
