Phones and tablets can see what they are close to.
It is low energy: your phone wont lose batter and a beacon
battery can last for years.
It is cross-platform: all the major phone platforms have
Bluetooth LE capabilities
Hold on
Hasnt this been done before?
Ah Yes, GPS
Take Bluetooth LE as an extension
of location technology:
It is a lot like GPS however GPS uses
a LOT of battery.
GPS doesnt work very well once
you get inside, Bluetooth LE on the
other hand does.
GPS is a LOCATION technology
Bluetooth LE is a PROXIMITY technology.
Which means that even if the beacon
MOVES youll still be able to find it.
Stage 1 Proof of technological
concept: Do they actually work?
For Stage 1 of the project free to sue digital content from
both the NMW and PCW was brought dynamically into the
hands of those involved in the testing. The digital content
was already curated by the museum who patterned with
Locly to use their platform and iBeacon.

Proof of Technological concept for the shared
iBeacon platform between V&A and National
Museum Wales
息PCW and Locly .
Developing a scalable solution for Digital
Culture and Heritage ibeacon broadcasting
To investigate the technological solution for sharing iBeacon platform
and multiple API and App data feeds for access to digitize cultural
and heritage information through beacon enabled devices e.g. Smart
phones and Tablets.
To investigate the possibility for users to use the same iBeacon platform
to access data both within the V&A and the National Slate Museum in
Wales.
Investigate and explore scalable solutions that would allow further
culture and heritage data sources and partners to be
included/integrated to provide a seamless experience for end users
between culture and heritage organizations and service providers e.g.
Universal Culture and Heritage iBeacon APP and data access.
