In Making Historic Preservation Relevant for the Next 50 Years, Donovan Rypkema noted that "the American preservation movement.... overwhelmingly owes its existence and success to the efforts of women." This program will showcase historic sites, personalities and heritage initiatives that demonstrate the powerful and visionary role of individual women and patriotic organizations (notably the Colonial Dames and the DAR) in saving some of our most beloved treasures, laying down tracks for the modern preservation movement and instilling in their families, neighbors and generation a respect for the grace and wonder of our native land. The point is to underscore that historic preservation and its allied concerns were a central platform that gave women civic and national influence in the years before they could even vote. The legacy is remarkable and a model of what the heritage enterprise should be and why it matters today.

This program traces almost 200 years in American library practice with a special focus on New England and its many municipal, historic and specialty research libraries. As a museum scholar, preservationist and photographer, Bill Hosley has visited hundreds of libraries. Hosley is fascinated by the architectural grandeur, mission and eloquence of the libraries built during the first wave of library formation from the 1870s-1920s. At a time when few communities had art museums, historical societies, or other ways of preserving civic treasures, Hosley notes, these libraries did it all one stop shopping for cultural enrichment, preservation, community memory and of course books and reading. The program illustrates and discusses dozens of libraries, in Connecticut, Vermont, Massachusetts and beyond plus specialty libraries. It also speaks to changes in mission and practice of libraries today and how their role as third places benefits from the quality of ambience and place so apparent in historic libraries. This armchair tour and discussion of library history reminds us of the richness of our heritage and the commitment of our communities to life-learning and access to ideas.

The Chatham Square Library located in Chinatown, Manhattan serves the local Chinese community. It was established in 1903 and contains collections focused on Chinese heritage in its basement as well as hosting many events celebrating Chinese culture. The library is a vital community hub, with the local community raising $18,000 to keep it open on Saturdays when it is busiest. It also helps Chinese immigrants and their descendants maintain connections to China through its collections of newspapers and materials from different regions of China. Tribal land acknowledgments are rapidly growing in popularity among institutions and organizations, taking the form of opening statements in meetings and conferences, signage, or website messages. One might ask why land acknowledgments are being made in a growing number of settings, including the museum. Acknowledgment is a simple, powerful way of showing respect and is intended as a step toward correcting the practices that erase or freeze Indigenous peoples history and culture while inviting and honoring the truth. However, the land acknowledgment is also at risk of ending where it began, perhaps well-conceived and received, but merely a symbolic gesture with little to no follow-through of engagement and real change. Tribal land acknowledgments are rapidly growing in popularity among institutions and organizations, taking the form of opening statements in meetings and conferences, signage, or website messages. One might ask why land acknowledgments are being made in a growing number of settings, including the museum. Acknowledgment is a simple, powerful way of showing respect and is intended as a step toward correcting the practices that erase or freeze Indigenous peoples history and culture while inviting and honoring the truth. However, the land acknowledgment is also at risk of ending where it began, perhaps well-conceived and received, but merely a symbolic gesture with little to no follow-through of engagement and real change.
