Ipads/Laptops, Smart Boards,
VoiCe4U, and Go Talk Devices
 Ipads and Laptops are very simple forms of
technology that allow students to access
their learning online. Many time teachers put
lessons, games, or homework online as a
creative way to increase student
engagement.
 Smart Boards are tools used by teachers in
order to make lessons more interesting. This
is a way for visual learners to excel since
everything is done through a giant computer
in front of them.
 Voice4U is a text-to-speech app that is
considered an assistive technology tool,
since it is used as a voice for students who
cannot communicate.
 Go Talk Devices are similar to text-to-speech
apps, however these assistive devices have
pictures of the things that a student wants to
do. When a student clicks on a certain

At the young age of 10 years old I met a boy my
age named John Blake. Me and JB were a lot alike,
however there was a tiny difference. John Blake
had severe down syndrome, and spent his entire
educational career in self containment rooms. My
senior year of high school I was set on going into
the medical field. My career choice was turned
upside down when one day in medical rotations, I
was chosen to observe my high schools self
containment room. In that room I was reunited with
my long lost friend. In that same room I also chose
my future career path. As of June 2014 I have been
on track to become a special education teacher. I
have completed tons of observation hours in
special education classrooms, and I have enjoyed
every second of it. Every time I walk into a new
classroom I am reminded of John Blake. His
disability did not allow him to communicate with
me, but it did not stop him from influencing my life
greatly.

I need to get out more
On July 11, 2018 I became the proud
mother of a baby girl named Ava Rey
Conant. As of that day anything that had
once interested me in my free time went
out the window. My only hobby is to take
care of my little girl 24/7. The only things
that me and my husband can really do
with a 3 month old are watch movies,
read her books, take her on walks, and
get her to play with her toys. I know that
doesnt sound like the most interesting
way to spend your time, but I honestly
wouldnt have it any other way. Every
day is a new experience and adventure
with Ava. Every day she manages to do
some new thing that keeps me
absolutely obsessed with her.
My philosophy on technology

As a special education major there is no way to not accept technology
into my future classroom. I believe this to be such an important
aspect in a special needs childs educational career, since the usage
of technology may the be only way they can fully integrate themselves
with their peers or a classroom. For an individual who cannot
communicate the usage of technology may be the only way he/she
can do so. If technology makes it easier for my students to learn, I
would be hindering them by not allowing them to use it.

What I have learned

 In my opinion student centered
teaching is the best way for students to
learn in a classroom. In this type of
method teachers and students both
share an equal and active role in a
students learning process. In a student
centered classroom, teaching and
assessment are connected because
student learning is continuously
measured during teacher instruction.

Since the technological era is something our students are born into, a lot
of the times we as teachers are going to have to take a backseat to our
students knowledge. School culture will no longer be the teacher doing
all the teaching. We need to understand that the student will assume this
role as well. We can already start to see this in regular classrooms. A lot
of the time a teacher will struggle with the overhead projector, and a
student will be the one to fix it. A student will no longer the be only
learner. Teachers are going to learn from them as well.

 Since I am a future special education
teacher I have a huge soft spot for
technology in the classroom. A lot of
students with disabilities do not have the
ability to communicate, and technology may
be their only way to do so. It is very obvious
to see that something about Ipads, laptops,
and phones catches a students attention
immediately. If students are allowed to do
their work online their participation will
increase, and if they can play computer
games with their peers collaboration will
increase also. It is often challenging for
these kids to interact with others, so
technology may allow them to form a bond
with their peers while also increasing their
sense of community.

It is very simple to integrate technology into weekly,
or even daily lesson plans. For example, if a math
lesson is being taught, the teacher can integrate a
small online game in order to increase student
engagement. Reading can be done online while the
students follow along to an electronic story. In order
to teach a geography lesson the students can go on
google maps, to explore around. Technology can
open an endless amount of opportunities to make
lesson plans fun and creative for the students.

It is very obvious to see that something about Ipads, laptops, and phones catches a students attention immediately. If students are allowed to do their work online their participation will increase, and if they can play computer games with their peers collaboration will increase also. It is often challenging for these kids to interact with others, so technology may allow them to form a bond with their peers while also increasing their sense of community.
  • 12. 12 It is very simple to integrate technology into weekly, or even daily lesson plans. For example, if a math lesson is being taught, the teacher can integrate a small online game in order to increase student engagement. Reading can be done online while the students follow along to an electronic story. In order to teach a geography lesson the students can go on google maps, to explore around. Technology can open an endless amount of opportunities to make lesson plans fun and creative for the students.
