- 4. Brief history Born September 1, 1795, he was the founder, editor and publisher of the New York Herald and a major figure in the history of American newspapers. By the time Bennett turned control of the Herald over to his son James Gordon Bennett Jr. In 1866, it had the highest circulation in America. However, under the younger Bennett's stewardship, the paper declined, and, after his death, it was merged with its arch-rival, the New York tribune. He first made headlines through his story about the murder of a prostitute, Bennett conducted the first-ever newspaper interview for it. James Gordon Bennett was the first reporter to get an interview with the United states president.
- 6. Brief History Born September 29, 1948, he is an African American journalist, sportscaster, newscaster, television personality and sports anchor. He has worked for major companies such as NBC, HBO and CBS. Gumbel has also made some cameo appearances (in movies) along side Nicolas cage and Michael cane in the movie the weatherman. in 2006, Gumbel teamed up with the NFL network and did play by play for the first time In his career. However he was questioned because of the remarks that were made about the former NFL commissioner and NFL players union leader. Gumbel got into the most trouble in his career when he blurted out what a F!@*$^g Idiot. just after he finished a hostile interview with Robert Knight of the FRC on the topic of gays being the leaders of boy scouts.

- 8. Summary So the two reporters I talked about James Gordon Bennett and Bryant Gumbel, both were reporters of different eras. Bennett living in the more difficult time because of the lack of technology in that era. His paper was probably part of the penny press . Gumbel probably got some of his sources from a wired service , we all know that that was not possible for Bennett. It was easy for Gumbel to become a journalist since he had all the computer-assisted reporting and typewriting machines. Then again Bennett had no one to critique his writing like Gumbel has today. Some call Gumbel a shock jock for his vulgar remarks but I dont think so I think he is a muckraker for doing what he did. Personally I would take Bryant Gumbel over James Gordon Bennett.
