This document discusses hockey player development and long term player development (LTPD) principles. It emphasizes that development is a long term process, not focused on short term results, and that the goal is to build a broad foundation of skills. Specific recommendations include focusing on the complete athlete rather than just competition, removing an emphasis on winning at young ages, and introducing skills in a systematic way. It also discusses benefits of cross-ice and half-ice hockey for young players like increased touches, passes, and shots. Experts note players develop better with more repetitions in close quarters on a smaller ice surface.
The document outlines the agenda for the Hockey Nova Scotia Annual General Meeting taking place May 5-7, 2017 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. It also provides draft budgets for developing grassroots and growing the game initiatives using funding from Hockey Canada.
Here are a few key points Brendan Shannahan made about the future of hockey:
- He sees the game moving towards smaller ice surfaces at the youth level to allow for more puck touches and skill development. Playing on NHL-sized rinks at young ages doesn't make sense.
- There will likely be more emphasis on skill development and less focus on systems/strategies at early ages. Practices should emulate game-like situations through drills and scrimmages.
- Countries like Canada have been slow to adopt some European youth hockey models like cross-ice games. But he believes North American hockey will continue progressing towards prioritizing individual skill-building over early specialization.
- The game
The document discusses long term player development (LTPD) in hockey. It emphasizes taking a player-centered approach and focusing on skill development over a 10-year period rather than short-term results. Cross-ice and half-ice games are recommended as they allow for more touches on the puck and build skills like skating and puck handling. Coaches are advised to focus on skills, avoid early specialization, and consider other sports to prevent burnout. The benefits of smaller rink sizes for developing young players are supported by statistics comparing player interactions in full-ice and cross-ice games.
The document summarizes updates from Hockey Nova Scotia's annual general meeting and minor hockey association presidents meeting. Key points include:
- Player registration in minor hockey increased by 26 players from 2014-15 to 2015-16, a 49% rise.
- A proposal was presented to create a new "Elite" Midget league for 15-16 year old players with a 30 game schedule and $2-3k maximum player budget.
- The two year Atom review concluded more players are developing at the highest level with more Atom AA teams, but travel could still be reduced. Continued monitoring of impacted players is planned.
- Discussion focused on concerns with HNS semi-annual meetings, proposals to

#2:
Before I start does anyone currently have a Junior Coach program within their organization?
#3: Junior coach program.Ive had this idea for a years but only just put it into place this year.
My goal was was to develop a program that improved the quality of the IP program (getting more coaching on the ice) as well support our future leaders (coaches) in the organization.
#4: 油
Program was available to:
Peewee age and up
Comply with the HNS Helper policy
Attend a mandatory meeting
Commit to helping out on the ice as much as possible
**Mandatory meeting was important because it set the stage for year around professionalism with the program.
If we took it serious and professional than hopefully they would as well.
Each junior coach is assigned to an IP group (based on their request), which they will work with throughout the season.
The junior coaches receive on-going support through professional development sessions (2 per season) and working with mentor coaches.
油
#5: Handout
Junior coaches role and expectations:
油
Must comply with the Hockey Nova Scotia on-ice helper policy.
油
Preparation - study the practice plan before you arrive at the rink.油 Be dressed and ready to go early.油 At the IP age monitoring kids in the lineup while they wait for the油zamboni油is an important part of the job.
Demonstration - a successful demonstration requires you to be prepared.油 Understand the drill and demonstrate the drill at the appropriate speed such that the kids understand what they are supposed to be doing and how they are supposed to be doing it.
油
Motivation - if the kids are doing well - tell them about it.油 A fist pump here and there goes a long way.油 Recognize those kids who are having trouble and hop in the drill with them and encourage them to keep going when they fall down, bobble a pass or miss the net. Learn their names. Have them learn your name. Be silly.
油
Organization - while the coaches are explaining drills to the kids this is a good time to organize pucks,油pylons油and nets as outlined in the practice plan.
油
Temptation - it's tempting to want to stickhandle and shoot pucks when you are on the ice.油 This is a distraction and could lead to injuries.油 The time to showcase your skills is during the demonstrations.
油
Fun - this is a unique opportunity - enjoy it.
油
TIPS & ADVICE:
油
Leadership
It's important to show respect
Take the time to connect and relate to the kids
Give the kids a voice and incorporate their thoughts/ideas
油
Practical advice when leading on ice:
Create an environment where it's okay to fail i.e. fall down.油
Explain WHY we are working on a skill or habit to get buy in
Arrive prepared - know the drills so you can demonstrate and explain the key points
油
#6: Handout with Agenda
We took a serious approach with the sessions.
First Session
More about the role, responsibilities and what to expect from the program.
**Having it development weekend really helped as its the only weekend with no-hockey all year. With kids from various ages/times, this really helped.
Second Session
More about leadership and team building skills, coaching tips, and feedback on the program
-
#7: My philosophy is that if WE take the program serious than they will take it serious.
The more we/them put into the program the more that/we will get out of it.
It was great to see all the kids get to know each other. It helped build a bit of a community.
coaching tips on skill progression. At the IP age kids have a wide range of skill development and its important that we know how to break down skills.
Physical literacy and the FUNdamentals

#8: Summary of the year
38 kids!
Not bad for an organization of 590 kids.
Increased the Coach to Player Ratio = more stations
Demos of drills more relatable and better technique
Overall energy and speed of practice -
Kids look up to the coaches ie: My son Nolan constantly talks about Brock and what a good player he is and how he wants to be like him when he grows up.

#12: My ideas
Ideas for next year:
Amend the policy to allow PeeWee aged kids to wear tracksuits instead of full gear.
Potential sponsor to cover the cost of sweatshirts or tack jackets to help identify the junior coaches on the ice.
Match up each junior coach with an IP coach for additional mentorship opportunities.
Specific strategy to recruit females into the program.
Have the junior coach take the NCCP coaching course: Intro/Community Coach Program.

Its a really WIN WIN.
The IP kids got better because of this program and so did the junior coaches.
