A consumer products company wanted to develop a quieter, higher performing hair dryer. Concepts from prototyping of noise reduction strategies and a new turbine/fan design resulted in conceptual prototypes incorporating innovative housing design, strategic damping material placement, improved intake design, and flow conditioning. A client developing water recreation equipment evaluated the feasibility of human-powered travel on water through analysis of hull design, power requirements, human capabilities, and canoe paddling dynamics. Small-scale prototyping of concept sketches determined an elliptical stroke machine was the best candidate, and full-size and pre-production prototypes were developed. A small appliance manufacturer sought to purify fluids through innovative technologies. Research evaluated contaminants and purification
