This is short description and photograph about Devika, the child I will be doing a portrait of. This was given to us by the teachers of her school.Devika is 4 years old and loves to play with her sisters. She also enjoys listening to music and clapping along to the beats. Her favourite colours are yellow and red and Devika likes to eat biscuits. She has cerebal palsy and comes to school everyday with her mum.
This is a brain storm of images from the internet which relate to Devika. This research has helped me understand Devikas personality and interests more.
This is a close up of a primary source drawing of a drum. I chose a drum because Devika has a strong interest in music. This is to also help improve my drawing skills and ideas for my portrait.
This is also a primary source drawing for a biscuit, as Devika enjoys eating them. All though I could not find a Indian brand biscuit, I think this still shows the research and primary observation.
After gathering information about Devika, I researched images on India and Kerala.
To help my painting develop, I researched artist that could influence my work. This painting has influenced my painting techniques.
I researched another portrait  artist to influence my work.
I researched Indian art to influence my painting , as this will gather information on painting techniques used by traditional Indian painters.
Information on the audience my painting is for. I did this to be able to show my understanding of my audience and the expectations of my painting
I went on a trip to the V&A, to look at the Indian art for more information on Indian artist.
This is some of the work leading up to my final idea of my painting.
Painting;  First OutcomeA review of my painting from the teachers of Devikas school.I particularly like the way in which Devika is looking across to her mother and sisters, there is such a sense of togetherness and yet the distance that is between them as a result of her disability. The strong motif of the yellow path is very intriguing. It adds to the dislocation between Devika and the rest of her environment  she can see and hear but she cant really join in. I really like the horizon being made up of stacks of speakers which gives the drawing a slightly futuristic feeling, although Devika lives in a small town in rural Kerala. The colours are very strong, and I like the contrast between the clothes that Devika wears and those of her mother and sisters.
Painting;  Final OutcomeAfter receiving the feed back of my painting, I was very pleased with the response but I decided I needed to change some areas of it. I then added palm trees and extra grass areas to make Devikas environment into a small town, which she lives in. Therefore my painting would be realistic.
