Australian Aboriginal Dot Paintings
Art Terms: Dot painting, patterns
Instructional Objectives
What do you want the learner to learn? (Be sure to reference the subject matter as well as
appropriate curriculum standards.)
The learner will learn:
the purpose of these paintings
how they are created
be able to distinguish what the paintings look like
Content Standard 4: All students will understand, analyze, and describe the arts in their
historical, social, and cultural contexts.

various cultures.
ART.IV.VA.EL.2 Identify specific works of art as belonging to particular cultures, times,
and places.
2. Pedagogy
What are your instructional strategies? (Be sure to design and include at least two different
strategies, such as, but not limited to, inductive and deductive.) Briefly describe the flow of
interaction for the learner.
Inductive strategy:
The information is given about Aboriginal paintings and we look at examples.
Then the students are asked to answer questions regarding what they have read
and choose examples of artworks that best fit what Aboriginal paintings should
look like.
Audio/Visual strategy:
Students need to visually see paintings to associate with the verbal information
that is given. Also they will have a better understanding of what is expected of
their art project when examples are shown.
Hands-on (normally I have to students paint but perhaps theres a program they
can use for this step?):
They will take this learned knowledge and apply them to their hands-on project
(making an Aboriginal painting with dots).
Active Response
What will you ask the learner to do to demonstrate understanding?
They will do a review on what they have learned. There will be multiple choice
questions about the purpose of Aboriginal paintings, a True/False question on the
method of creating paint, a question on patterns and an identifying question to see
if the student can classify what Aboriginal paintings should look like. All this
information they have acquired will be useful when they create their own painting
project.
Feedback
How will you give the learner feedback on the actions taken?
If they are correct, they can move onto the next question. There will also be a
short explanation of why their answer is correct to reinforce their learning. If their
answer was incorrect, they will be asked to try again and also, a guided question
that will lead them to think about the original question in a different way. There
will also be an information button to reference them back to the information that
can help them to answer the question correctly.
