Looper is a science fiction/action film set in the future which takes us into the world of the
‘Looper’ assassins.

In 2044, the USA is vastly controlled by the mafia after an economic collapse. Also, a tenth
of the country’s population have developed what they first believed to be a super power. In
reality, all they call do is levitate small objects. In 2074, time travel has been invented but
immediately banned. As the country’s technology has furthered, it is impossible for people
to literally get away with murder. As a result, gangsters send any people they want killed
back to 2044, where they are disposed of by Looper assassins. When the mob wants to end
a Loopers contract, they send back his 2074 self. This is known as ‘closing the loop’. If a
Looper does not honour his contractthey are killed.

Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) works in 2044 for Abe (Jeff Daniels), a man sent back from 2074
to run the city of Kansas. One night, Seth, Joe’s best friend, reveals that he was supposed to
close his loop, but decided to let him escape. Seth’s future self told Seth about someone
called the Rainmaker, who has taken over 2074 America and is closing every single loop.
Seth is eventually killed by the Gat Men after Joe, who was hiding him, was blackmailed by
Abe.

Joe’s future self (Bruce Willis) appears but escapes after knocking Joe unconscious. Now
realising that the Gat Men are after him, Joe decides he must kill Old Joe before he is killed
himself. After a meeting in their favourite diner, Old Joe reveals that he is here to kill the
Rainmaker as a child because he had his wife killed. Old Joe has a map containing 3 locations
of children that are possibly the Rainmaker. Joe tears a strip from the map and heads to a
farm owned by a woman named Sara, who lives with her son, Cid.

Cid doesn’t believe that Sara is his real Mother because he was brought up by her sister until
she mysteriously died. Joe and Sara agree that he should stay with them until Old Joe
appears. After a few days, one of Joe’s colleagues, Jesse, shows up to interrogate Sara. Cid
appears and kills Jesse after a fall down the stairs lets out a telekinetic blast which rips out
his insides. Joe believes that Cid is the Rainmaker and after Sara reveals that it was Cid who
accidently killed her sister, he finally realises.

Old Joe is captured by the Gat Men but swiftly kills them all, including Abe. One survives
however, Kid Blue, so he follows him to Sara’s home. A battle ensues which results in Joe
killing him. Old Joe slips away to find Cid. Joe finds Old Joe, Sara and Cid in a field. As he gets
there, Cid is about to kill Old Joe, but Sara calms him down by telling him that his Mother is
with him. Old Joe aims his gun at Sara which makes Joe realise that if she dies then Cid will
almost definitely grow up with hate which will result in him becoming the Rainmaker. Joe
makes the decision to shoot himself, so Old Joe would never have existed, therefore giving
Cid a life of love from his Mother so he won’t become the Rainmaker.
