Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) provide unlimited online participation and open access to course content via the web. MOOCs are massive in scale, open to all, online, and cover a single topic or course. They are characterized by being free of charge, requiring no formal entry qualifications, using social media and online tools to facilitate a learner-centered experience with increased student participation and self-direction. The history of MOOCs includes the open education movement and early connectivist MOOCs, leading to larger MOOCs offered by universities today that can differ in their approaches.

- #4: MOOC stands for Massive Open Online Course. Its massive because it can have an unlimited number of learners working together. Its open because anyone can participate. Traditional MOOCs are offered free of charge, unless they are taken for university credit. The work all takes place online, through a combination of social networking, wiki creation, real-time meeting in venues like Skype, and through audio and video podcasts. Its a single-topic course, lasting from a few weeks to an entire semester.
