- 4. Historic Context 1837 In the original Light-Kingston plan the Riverbank precinct was a cohesive whole. The west was as significant as the east. The Grand Victorian Era For 100 years (1836-1936) the Riverbank was developed as the focus of civic identity. Grand gestures (tree boulevards + open spaces) linked activities and places. The Suburban Era The last wave of major Riverbank work took place during the height of Adelaide’s 1960’s suburban expansion. Much of the landscape and path networks we see today are from this era – small in scale and unable to support varied gatherings of people or combined uses such as cycling and walking. The Urban Era As Metropolitan Adelaide grows in population the Riverbank could attract millions more visitors each year. There will be a focus on regenerating existing urban areas to reduce suburban sprawl bringing more residents closer to the Riverbank.
