Merging Spanish and
English Through
Cognates
-one small step-
What Are Cognates?
-Words that share common spelling and pronunciation in two
languages
Here are some examples:
English to Spanish
doctor -- doctor
cereal -- cereal
hamburger -- hamburguesa
hospital -- hospital
class -- cl叩se
student -- estudiante
rat -- rata
lamp -- l叩mpara
and the list goes on...
Why are these helpful?
Students can begin to bridge
the language gap by learning
that many words in the two
languages not only share
common roots and
pronunciation, but also
spelling.
As students begin to take
more risks in language
learning, they will feel more
comfortable trying out some
possible cognates.
What about false cognates?
There are many. Here are just a few:
embarrassed -- embarrasada (pregnant)
assist -- asistir (to attend)
rope -- ropa (clothing)
realize -- realizar (to carry out or make
happen)
pie -- pie (foot)
nude -- nudo (knot)
Make a list
As you teach, make a list of cognates that appear in your
lessons.
Students will begin to do this exercise all the time and will be
excited to find new ones.
What if I don't speak Spanish?
If you google "false cognates in Spanish" you will find a wealth
of examples.
Write down a few that look to be "high frequency-type" words
and present them to the class.
Bilingual students will latch on to this idea of "cognados."
Use Two Colors
Write English words side by
side in a column style, using
different colors for each
language.
Escribe las palabras de inlg辿s
y en espa単ol lado a lado, en
el estilo de dos columnos.
Hay que usar colores
distintas por cada idioma.
Teacher starts the process, students
carry it on.
You as the teacher will begin to show the students how to write
them on the cognate poster.
After a few times, they will be solely responsible for doing this.
There you go! Enjoy making
cross-language connections
with your students.
side note: Monolingual students find this
process to be valuable in learning a new
language as well.
