The study found that patients who received both surgery and post-operative radiation therapy to stabilize the bone were more likely to return to functional status compared to patients who only received surgery. This study conducted in Mulago Hospital ICU in Uganda aimed to determine if abnormal chest x-rays and Modified Early Warning Scores (MEWS) could predict patient mortality. The prospective observational study analyzed 87 patients admitted to the ICU requiring mechanical ventilation. Results found patients with MEWS 5 and abnormal superior mediastinum on chest x-rays were associated with higher mortality. While abnormal chest x-rays may help predict mortality, the relationship was not statistically significant likely due to small sample size. MEWS was a better predictor of mortality and could help prioritize treatment.
