The Netherlands officially supported the UAE's bid to host Expo 2020. The Dutch Foreign Minister announced this support during a meeting with the UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs in Dubai. Members of Dutch and Benelux business councils will contribute substantially to help the UAE realize its plans for hosting the event. The Netherlands has over 250 companies in the UAE focused on sectors like oil and gas, water, and architecture, and Dutch companies have aided many landmark UAE projects, such as land reclamation for Palm Island.

Dutch Foreign Minister Frans Timmermans announced this news during a mutual meeting with Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs, in Dubai. Members of the Netherlands Business Council and the Benelux Business Council will be contributing substantially to the UAE to help realize plans for hosting the event. Netherlands has over 250 companies in the UAE. The main sectors where Netherlands has a substantial presence are oil and gas, water, hospitality, creative design and architecture. Many of the landmark projects in the UAE have been developed with the aid of advanced knowledge from the Netherlands. One of the best examples is the Palm Island, land for which was dredged out by the Dutch company, Van Oord.
