Ethernet is the most common LAN technology that uses different media like copper cable and fiber optics. It has evolved over time from using coaxial cable and hubs, which operated in half duplex mode and caused collisions, to using switches and full duplex communication over twisted pair and fiber. The Ethernet standard has been expanded to support higher bandwidths up to 10Gbps and beyond to support new network services by building on its addressing scheme, frame format, and ability to incorporate new technologies.
