Simple verbal instructions on how to
complete each level

Praise is given when a level has
completed it successfully. Child is also provided with an item
that they will need in order to complete the next level.

Encouragement provided when an error is made (try again)
Does it provide opportunities for practice
              and review?


Child is able to make errors then try again

It does have an element of trial & error but after 3
attempts to complete the level, if unsuccessful they are
taken back to the main screen.

Child cannot review their work as the game does not save
the finished product.
Does the software offer the learner
        choices and control?

The child is given the choice of deciding which game he/she would like
to play, however if they don?t pick the ¡°correct¡± level, they are told to go
back to the map and choose another level.

The software does not allow the child to express their creativity as it is
fully structured.

In the beginning there is a word game which requires the child to spell
4 different words in order to move on to the main game. If a child
cannot spell, he/she will not be able to play the game.
Who is the software developmentally
       appropriate for? Why?


The software is suitable for children ages six and up

In order to play the game, the child must have literacy and
numeracy skills
  spelling, shapes, word knowledge, addition of numbers and
  time
Is it appropriately challenging?


Provides opportunities to solve problems using literacy and
numeracy skills

Encourages the use of trial and error to discover correct
sequences

However, the game does not have other sequences or levels
e.g. time
  once the game has been completed, you cannot play it again
  therefore, no room for further learning
Does it have appropriate media
           and activities?

The visuals are neat and colourful

The on-screen layout is clean and clutter-free

Includes eight problem solving activities
  one must be completed in order to move onto the next

noisy)

User can navigate easily as audible instructions are provided with
text
There is a way to go back to the previous segment (Click on
?Maps?)
Animation is clear as images are big and defined, not small and
hard to see (too detailed)
There are pictures that help guide the user to another location (on
the Map)
Is the software presented in an Enjoyable
            and Interesting manner?
YES because
  it is presented in the form of a storyline (do the tasks to
 find the treasure)
 Triggers interest, enthusiasm, enjoyment, cooperative
 learning and solitary play
 Works with children?s interest (puzzles, spelling, ranging
 items, building creatively, matching patterns, time
 concept, calculation etc.)
Cont¡­

Child did not seem to be distracted by surroundings and seemed to
focus well on the game solely

Software does not only emphasize on making it an enjoyable and
interesting experience, it is educational too

Promotes motivation as the Pirate helps when mistakes are made and
his tone is sympathetic, and when the user makes a good move, the
Pirate provides encouragement and praise
Is the software accessible to children? What

  • 2. Does it provide positive, formative feedback and achievement measures? Simple verbal instructions on how to complete each level Praise is given when a level has completed it successfully. Child is also provided with an item that they will need in order to complete the next level. Encouragement provided when an error is made (try again)
  • 3. Does it provide opportunities for practice and review? Child is able to make errors then try again It does have an element of trial & error but after 3 attempts to complete the level, if unsuccessful they are taken back to the main screen. Child cannot review their work as the game does not save the finished product.
  • 4. Does the software offer the learner choices and control? The child is given the choice of deciding which game he/she would like to play, however if they don?t pick the ¡°correct¡± level, they are told to go back to the map and choose another level. The software does not allow the child to express their creativity as it is fully structured. In the beginning there is a word game which requires the child to spell 4 different words in order to move on to the main game. If a child cannot spell, he/she will not be able to play the game.
  • 5. Who is the software developmentally appropriate for? Why? The software is suitable for children ages six and up In order to play the game, the child must have literacy and numeracy skills spelling, shapes, word knowledge, addition of numbers and time
  • 6. Is it appropriately challenging? Provides opportunities to solve problems using literacy and numeracy skills Encourages the use of trial and error to discover correct sequences However, the game does not have other sequences or levels e.g. time once the game has been completed, you cannot play it again therefore, no room for further learning
  • 7. Does it have appropriate media and activities? The visuals are neat and colourful The on-screen layout is clean and clutter-free Includes eight problem solving activities one must be completed in order to move onto the next

Animation is clear as images are big and defined, not small and hard to see (too detailed) There are pictures that help guide the user to another location (on the Map)

YES because it is presented in the form of a storyline (do the tasks to find the treasure) Triggers interest, enthusiasm, enjoyment, cooperative learning and solitary play Works with children?s interest (puzzles, spelling, ranging items, building creatively, matching patterns, time concept, calculation etc.)

Cont¡­ Child did not seem to be distracted by surroundings and seemed to focus well on the game solely Software does not only emphasize on making it an enjoyable and interesting experience, it is educational too Promotes motivation as the Pirate helps when mistakes are made and his tone is sympathetic, and when the user makes a good move, the Pirate provides encouragement and praise
