Ellis Island is located in New York Bay and served as the immigration station where millions of immigrants from European countries were inspected and processed before entering the United States between 1892 to 1954. During inspections, physicians quickly evaluated immigrants for medical conditions and contagious diseases, sending those who failed back to their home countries. While the island originally covered only 3.3 acres, it now spans 27.5 acres after landfill additions. Arguments For and Against DREAMers For: These children were not responsible for the way in which they ended up in the U.S. For: These Children will provide valuable assets to America in the future Against: Injecting already over-burdened schools with more children the states, and school districts cannot afford. Against: Takes attention away from American students.
- 6. How Can Social Workers Help Advocacy- According to the code of ethics a social worker is required to advocate where there is prejudice or discrimination. Organize- Rally support for the immigrant cause by agitating the population into action. Appeal to Lawmakers- Write letters reaching out to Senators and members of the House of Representatives, telling them where social workers stand on the issue.
- 7. Major Problems: Social Security Fraud Sometimes, not even a card is required for job openings. Immigrants have been found to make more than one social security number under different names. Then they collect federal benefits and send the money back to their families. Using dead peoples social security number in order to trade federal benefits for drugs and other illegal substances.
- 8. Solutions Biometric social security cards that would employ retina scan and thumb print technology instead of a number. E-Verify- Internet data-base that analyzes a potential employees I-9 forms and tax returns.
