The European Court of Human Rights ruled on the case of Lautsi and Others v. Italy regarding the presence of crucifixes in Italian public school classrooms. The Court found that having crucifixes on the wall of each classroom did not violate the principle of secularism or the religious freedom of students. It viewed the crucifix as a cultural and historical symbol representing Italy's development and the values underlying the Italian constitution, such as liberty, equality, human dignity and religious toleration.
