This study examined the effects of He-Ne laser radiation and UVC radiation on mitotic index and DNA profiles in mice. 100 mice were divided into groups exposed to laser radiation at different time periods, UVC radiation for 1 hour, laser pre-exposure followed by UVC, and UVC pre-exposure followed by laser. Mitotic index, which measures the percentage of cells undergoing cell division, and DNA electrophoresis were analyzed at various time points after exposure. Results showed that UVC radiation decreased mitotic index and increased DNA damage over time, while laser pre-exposure protected against these effects of subsequent UVC exposure by inducing antioxidant defenses and DNA repair mechanisms. Laser exposure alone had minor effects on mitotic index.

This document proposes an adaptive noise driven total variation filtering method for denoising magnitude MR images corrupted by Rician noise. It begins with an introduction to MR imaging and Rician noise in magnitude MR images. Existing denoising methods like Gaussian, wavelet and total variation filtering are discussed. The proposed method estimates the noise level using local variances and adapts the regularization parameter in total variation filtering accordingly. Experimental results show the proposed method achieves better denoising performance than non-local means, bilateral and multiscale LMMSE filtering based on mean opinion scores and metrics like MSE and SSIM.

The goal of solar ultraviolet (UV) simulation is to reproduce the natural solar UV spectrum. However, this spectrum changes continuously depending on parameters, such as latitude, season, time, cloudiness, etc. From spectra recorded worldwide throughout the year, a realistic ("standard") solar UV spectrum at Earth level was defined by the Deutsches Institut f|r Normung e.V. (DIN) to represent a "worst" case situation. Exposure of human skin to such a spectrum is likely to result in intense biological effects. Simulated solar UV spectra should match the standard spectrum as closely as possible. Here, we present a method to assess the match between a laboratory spectrum and the standard spectrum. Representative UV sources such as xenon arcs, metal halide lamps and fluorescent tubes, along with various filters, have been measured. Differences between the relative irradiance of UV candidate spectra and the standard are calculated for each wavelength. These differences are squared and summed. The lower the sum, the better the match of the source spectrum to the standard sun. This method may be used with or without biological weighting by an action spectrum. We have selected the erythema action spectrum to assess and rank candidate sources. Our analysis shows that filtered ultraviolet B fluorescent tubes are the worst way of simulating solar radiation, with and without weighting by the erythema action spectrum. UV spectra from solaria equipped with combinations of ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B fluorescent tubes are also far from satisfactory. In general, metal halide lamps rank slightly better than the fluorescent UVB tubes. The choice of UV filter plays a significant role in the compliance of candidate UV source. In conclusion, the suggested method allows the determination of the most appropriate UV source to simulate real solar exposure for any targeted biological damage.

One of the major long term consequences of chronic non extreme sun exposures is the development of photoaging. The recent definition of a standard daily ultraviolet radiation (DUVR) spectrum has allowed us to reproduce non-zenithal sun exposure conditions. Exposure to simulated DUVR induces biological damage in human skin, suggesting the need for an appropriate daily photoprotection. The reconstructed human skin in vitro, including a living dermal equivalent and a fully differentiated epidermis represents a predictive tool to study the effects of UV. In the present study, sunscreen products were evaluated after topical application on human reconstructed skin in vitro. Two commercial sunscreens (A and B) having similar SPF value (~15) but different profile of transmission over the UVA range were tested on skin models exposed to increasing doses of DUVR. Another pair of sunscreens was also tested. Product C had a SPF ~18 with a well-balanced UVB/UVA absorption profile and product D, with SPF ~27 and low UVA absorption. Biological parameters were assessed by (i) histology, (ii) immunostaining of dermal fibroblasts and (iii) MMP-1 production. Products A and C gave a better protection from DUVR with regard to fibroblast alterations and MMP-1 release compared to products B and D respectively. These results support that a well balanced profile of absorption and the level of UVA protection is of higher relevance than the SPF value to ensure an efficient daily photoprotection from DUVR with regard to end points evaluated in this study, especially the photoaging related biological markers.

Although formal methods are not widespread in practical usage at a heavyweight level, their influence as crept into software engineering practice to the extent that they are no longer necessarily called formal methods in their use. In addition, in areas where safety and security are important, with the increasing use of computers in such applications, formal methods are a viable way to improve the reliability of such software-based systems. Their use in hardware where a mistake can be very costly is also important. This talk explores the journey of formal methods to the present day and speculates on future directions.

As a consequence, data obtained using polysulphone films were considered correct
for estimating the proportion of received UVA radiations.
Only outdoor activities were considered. A ¡®standard¡¯ leisure activity was defined by
calculating the average of the proportions calculated for the following activities:
tennis, sailing, swimming, walking, golf, gardening and sunbathing. When results from
measures made on humans were not available, measurements made on manikins
were taken. Fractions have been rounded to the closer 0- or 5-ending number.
To calculate ¡®absolute¡¯ UVA doses (units: J/cm 2), the
following method has been applied:

measured, using two Solar-Light Biometer 501
detectors (Figure 1) located in the French Riviera.

RESULTS
The proportions of ambient UVA radiations received during the standard leisure outdoor occupational activity are shown on Figure 2.

A relationship between daily UVA and UVe doses has been established, that
allows the calculation daily UVA dose. The best fit and the 95% upper and lower
confidence level curves for predicted values have been plotted on Figure 5.
For the French Riviera, the relationship between daily UVA and UVe doses is
given by the equation:
UVA dose (J/cm2) = 10.79 x (erythemal UV dose)0.82
For instance, for a clear sunny day (20 MED): Outdoor ambient UVA dose:
10.79 x (20) 0.82 = 125 J/cm2
For the standard leisure activity described here, the foot may receive up to:
125 J/cm2 x 60% = 75 J/cm2 .
These data can be used to estimate the UVA protection level needed on the

LIMITS
? For a given anatomical site, wide differences exist, depending on the activity. If different occupational activities are addressed, then calculations may
need to be adapted.
? As pointed out by Diffey et al. 4, the extrapolation of results for a given location to another location may not be appropriate where the culture or the
solar environment are substantially different.
? Only outdoor activities have been addressed. The main portion of UVA radiation passes through standard glass, thus high UVA doses may be received
during indoor activities. As results were derived from measures in erythemal units, they cannot be applied to any activity involving a long indoor stay.
Additional research is required to correctly address the absolute doses of UVA radiations received either outdoor or indoor.
CONCLUSIONS
? Rough ratios of ambient UVA rays that we receive during a standard leisure occupational activity have been determined.
? A method to estimate the absolute level of UVA doses received outdoor has been suggested.
? These data may be useful to define the adequate level of UVA protection that sunscreens should provide, according to consumer habits.
