ºÝºÝߣs from part one of #usabilityfail: stop wasting your marketing budget on bad usability.
Seminar presented in Perth, Western Australia November 2011
The document provides guidance on personal branding for academics. It discusses generating a compelling narrative or "story" that connects academics to potential collaborators. It recommends crafting a story that is clear, motivates others to work with the academic, and relates to the listener emotionally and in their language. The document also discusses using online networks and tools like blogs, LinkedIn, and conferences to develop new contacts and get noticed by influencers in their field. Academics are encouraged to spend 12 hours per week on sales and marketing efforts.
This document provides guidance on networking at career fairs. It outlines best practices for preparation, such as researching target companies and crafting an effective introduction. The agenda includes learning how to describe networking strategies, create a professional pitch, and develop a target list for an upcoming career fair. Case studies provide scenarios to brainstorm networking solutions. The presentation emphasizes coming prepared with knowledge of companies and following up afterwards.
This document introduces a social recruiting platform that allows recruiters to:
- Reach over 600 million users on Facebook and reduce hiring time and costs.
- View interactive multimedia profiles with videos, documents and presentations. Conduct video interviews to reduce interview effort.
- Leverage social interactions and ratings to grade candidates and get quality profiles in seconds through referrals.
It is a pay-as-you-go model where recruiters can post jobs, view matching profiles, and contact candidates for free or through paid subscription plans with more features and extended validity periods. The platform aims to help recruiters find qualified candidates through an engaging social experience at low costs.
Learnings from founding a Computer Vision Startup: Chapter 0 IntroductionTill Quack
?
This document summarizes the learnings from two founders of computer vision startups. It introduces Till Quack and Jan Erik Solem, the founders of kooaba and Polar Rose respectively. Both startups were spun off from university research labs and focus on using computer vision for mobile and web applications. The document outlines their backgrounds and experiences founding vision startups. It then provides an agenda for a discussion between the two founders about lessons learned in areas like product development, business models, engineering, marketing and competition.
The document discusses skills for Luddites in technology and work. It argues that technology is adopted by businesses to increase profits, not for its own sake. While technology may disrupt some jobs, it also enables new opportunities. The document urges job seekers to focus on developing work-related skills like research, information handling, communication, and interpersonal skills, and to show how they apply these skills and continuously learn, rather than focusing on technology alone. Employers want motivated, adaptable employees who can enhance business goals.
The document discusses how job search and career management have changed dramatically in the last 5 years. It contrasts the "old model" of career management from the 2010 model. The old model relied on tools like CVs organized by reverse chronology, job boards, and cover letters. The 2010 model emphasizes individual development and reputation through tools like social networks, blogs, publishing content and gaining recommendations. It argues the CV needs to be reimagined for the 2010 model to focus more on expertise, contributions and networks over just job titles and duties.
This is an accompanying slidedeck for the podcast with Adaptive Path. A case study where design has driven the web strategy for this science research organisation.
This document discusses how social tools can be harnessed to generate business benefits through innovation. It describes how people are now empowered through social networking, mobile devices, and bringing social tools into enterprises. IBM has transformed itself into a social business to harness innovation with over 500,000 employees in 170 countries, many of whom work remotely. The document outlines IBM's approach to creating an innovation environment, finding a common language for collaboration across silos, establishing idea generation processes, and providing training to employees.
This is the presentation I gave on 7-Mar-13 at the National Federation of Housing's Marketing and Communications Conference - please contact me if you have any questions or comments.
IBM has transformed from a traditional company to embrace social business by empowering its workforce to engage through social media. It developed programs like social media training, guidelines for participation, and an expertise locator. This enabled thousands of employees to publish content and engage online. IBM also created systems to map the social media landscape, measure engagement, and identify influential voices and topics. The goal was to accelerate forward thinking by designing a trusted digital system for interaction between experts and customers.

The document discusses the future of work and how technology is changing the workplace. It addresses how tasks like customer acquisition, retention, and product creation are evolving from focusing on local and physical work to utilizing cloud-based technologies, social networks, and remote work. The future of work involves more flexible and virtual arrangements between employers and employees as work becomes less centralized and location-dependent.
The document discusses responsive web design and argues that it needs to evolve beyond just resolution-based experiences. It notes that responsive design is great for reach but not for personalization. It advocates for an experience design approach that personalizes the experience based on factors like location, past behavior, social connections, and device. The document concludes that responsive design must focus on personalized experiences driven by consumer priorities to remain relevant, and that websites need to continually optimize experiences based on new information.

The document discusses product design and learning from customer feedback. It makes three key points:
1) Build something you're passionate about since customers can't envision new technologies.
2) Ask customers the right way, like asking about desired outcomes or problems rather than specific features. Integrate product feedback loops.
3) Measure customer interactions and feedback through testing to continually improve the product through iterative design. Customers often don't know what they want, so products must evolve based on real-world use.
The document discusses web-based collaboration tools that can help teams work virtually. It begins with introductions of the presenters and an overview of collaboration and its benefits. Drivers of virtual collaboration for organizations are then reviewed, such as reducing costs and increasing flexibility. The evolution of web tools is examined, noting early challenges and newer issues. A matrix of tool categories and functions is then introduced to help attendees understand available options for virtual teamwork.
The document outlines a digital media strategy for MyHotel, including objectives to increase brand awareness, showcase the hotel, and generate revenue through business, leisure, meetings, and resident guests. It identifies the targeted audiences as those aged 18-70 from the Middle East, US, UK, Germany who consume internet media on various devices. 1) Recognize the benefits and risks of cloud services; 2) Understand the business impact and economics of cloud computing; and 3) Learn how to govern and manage a cloud environment and develop a cloud services strategy.
The document discusses requirements gathering and communicating with management. It emphasizes that requirements should address actual needs rather than implementation details, and that gathering requirements requires understanding perspectives through open communication rather than blind obedience. Effective communication involves asking questions to uncover deeper needs and vision, and defining deliverables that meet those needs.
The document discusses the importance of usability and user experience in digital marketing. It notes that while companies spend large portions of their budgets on digital marketing, very few allocate dedicated budgets to usability testing and user experience design. The document outlines common usability failures and provides tips for measuring the costs of bad usability. It emphasizes that improving usability can significantly increase conversions and that usability testing and design should be a priority alongside digital marketing spending.

Formal Methods: Whence and Whither? [Martin Fr?nzle Festkolloquium, 2025]Jonathan Bowen
?
Alan Turing arguably wrote the first paper on formal methods 75 years ago. Since then, there have been claims and counterclaims about formal methods. Tool development has been slow but aided by Moore¡¯s Law with the increasing power of computers. Although formal methods are not widespread in practical usage at a heavyweight level, their influence as crept into software engineering practice to the extent that they are no longer necessarily called formal methods in their use. In addition, in areas where safety and security are important, with the increasing use of computers in such applications, formal methods are a viable way to improve the reliability of such software-based systems. Their use in hardware where a mistake can be very costly is also important. This talk explores the journey of formal methods to the present day and speculates on future directions.

User Experience stands at a crossroads: will we live up to our potential to design a better world? or will we be co-opted by ¡°product management¡± or another business buzzword?
Looking backwards, this talk will show how UX has repeatedly failed to create a better world, drawing on industry data from Nielsen Norman Group, Baymard, MeasuringU, WebAIM, and others.
Looking forwards, this talk will argue that UX must resist hype, say no more often and collaborate less often (you read that right), and become a true profession ¡ª in order to be able to design a better world.
