Polygamy involves a man being married to more than one wife. Women in polygamous marriages in Africa have faced oppression, abuse, and discrimination for a long time due to male dominance. The author shares her experience growing up in a polygamous family in Kenya, where her mother was the second wife and struggled to provide for her four children with resources having to be shared among three families. Common challenges that arise in polygamous marriages include jealousy, competition, lack of trust, favoritism shown by husbands to particular wives, accusations, and resentment between co-wives and their children.

Jean is a twenty-seven year old half Korean and half American Caucasian woman. She is married to Tom, an American Caucasian, and the mother of three children: Brent, age six; Sarah, age four; and Tommy, age two. She recently sought counseling from a crisis service for battered women. Jean is depressed and withdrawn. She has a very small frame and reports that she has lost ten pounds in the past month. This weight loss, coupled with her flat affect, makes her appear quite ill. She denies any suicidal ideation, although she says that she doesnt know how she will continue to take care of her children and Toms sick mother.
Jeans husband, Tom, is given to bouts of heavy drinking and questionable drug use. He has violent episodes in which he alternately verbally and physically abuses her. He likes to bring his friends home after a drinking binge and make her serve them breakfast. He verbally abuses her in their presence, adding to her humiliation. During these episodes he calls her sexual names and tells her he wants to send her back to Korea and keep the children here.
Jean and Tom met and married seven years ago when he was in the army and stationed in Korea. They moved to the United States and settled near his family. Jean wanted to come to the United States to himself.
Jean reports to the counselor that the verbal and physical abuse is escalating and she often cant sleep because she lies awake with fear. Jean sleeps with Sarah on the nights when Tom is angry and drunk. Jean asks the counselor what she is doing wrong to make Tom behave this way toward her.
Jean has a high-school diploma but little work experience. Tom went to computer school using the funds from his Army G.I. Bill. Jean always wanted to go to college, but worked during the first year of their marriage so Tom could get his degree. The children came quickly and there was no time for her to go to school. Now, when she and Tom discuss it, he tells her she isnt smart enough and its not his place to watch the children. Her place is at home. Toms mother is very sick and Jean makes daily visits to her mother-in-laws home. She feels it is her duty to care for her husbands mother. Stereotyping is any commonly known public belief about a certain social group or individual. They are often confused with prejudices because like prejudices a stereotype is simply based on a prior assumption. There are many different types of stereotypes such as race, gender and lifestyle. Stereotypes are not easy for individuals to deal with because at times others say and do things that are extremely harsh. These stereotypes can affect individuals in many ways if they dont know how to overcome what others say.
I have gone through a lot of stereotypes in my time, but one that is most common is my race. I am Puerto Rican, African American, and Italian. When people here that I am Puerto Rican, African American, and Italian they ask if I like to drink. They say that people in these races are usually heavy drinkers. They are surprised to know that I dont drink and at times I get asked whats wrong with me and I reply nothing. Another stereotype I here is Do you have family members in the Mafia? No, I dont have family members in the Mafia. Just because someone is Italian it doesnt mean that they are nor have family members that are a part of the Mafia. Another stereotype I have had to deal with because of my race is Do you have members of your family that are in jail? Once again no I dont and I just brush it off. Lastly, the one I hear a lot is that Puerto Ricans are uneducated lazy people and have a lot of kids with different individuals. I obviously am an educated individual. I have gone to work to come home to three beautiful children all from the same woman and have provided, and taken great care of them. My home is always clean and smells delightful.
A stereotype that I have dealt with and continue to deal with is being mixed with African American. There is a lot of stereo typing and always wondering whats going on around me. Some people say that we are beneath them and shouldnt acquire a position above them. Some people wont listen to me when I tell them how it is. Just the other day someone told me you are lucky to be African American because all the benefits you get. When I lived in New York I held a wonderful job as a Paraprofessional. When I moved to Florida I knew it was going to be tough at first when we moved because of several reasons. In New York, I had two children in school, but in the start of Florida only one would attend because of when the others birthday. This left not one but two children at home. Child Care for one child is expensive enough so imagine for two. So I decided to stay home and concentrate on not only my studies but my daughters education. She loved going to school and so since in New York I gained the knowledge of teaching as a Paraprofessional, I decided to work with her. Chapter 1: Traditional Practices
Every human society has a body of beliefs that regulate the way people
behave and relate to each other in the society. Over the years, these beliefs and
modes of behaviour are modified to suit the changing circumstances of the society
concerned. African societies are no exception. What is different, however, is that
as a result of the contact with Western civilization and the uneven influence that
this civilization has had on African societies, one finds in every country a contrast
between a very Westernized society usually comprising the educated people in the
urban cent res and a traditional rural society whose beliefs and way 'of life often
show that they have hardly been touched by Western culture.
In this chapter, we will consider some aspects of African culture which have
a particular bearing on the issue of women's emancipation. These are customs,
traditions and beliefs which have, over the years, helped to keep women under
subjugation, and to make them feel generally inferior to men and incapable of
operating at the same level as men in society. These are: the institution of marriage
with its related issues of bride-wealth, child-marriage, polygamy, purdah,
widowhood and inheritance of property, high fertility and puberty rites with
specific reference to female circumcision.
Marriage
The institution of marriage is a very important one in all African societies. It
is primarily a union between two families, rather than between two individuals.
Traditionally, marriages are arranged between two families. When a young man
decides he wants a particular woman for his wife, he tells his parents about it, and
it then becomes the parents' responsibility and that of elders of the extended family
to ask for the woman's hand from her parents. Before this is done, the parents try to
find out all they can about the woman's family, whether there are any chronic or
hereditary illnesses such as mental disorders in the family, whether there are any
known criminals in the family, whether the women in the family are known to be
respectful and hardworking or not and so on. These are important matters that are
known to ensure the stability or otherwise of a marriage. Emotional attachment
between husband and wife was supposed to develop later, and therefore love
between a young man and a young woman was not in itself considered legitimate
grounds for marriage. If the young man's parents are not satisfied with what they
find out, they will tell their son that he should look for someone else, or suggest
somebody they approve of to him. In the same way, when a woman's family has
been approached with a proposal of marriage from the man's parents, they also
investigate the man's background and decide whether or not they would want their

- 1. Polygamy is simply a marital state in which a man is married to more than one wife. People of Africa have travelled a long way with discrimination, oppression and abuse more especially women married as second wives in a polygamous marriage.They have been abused, oppressed and discriminated in the family and community. This has happened for a very long time due to male dominance in the church and in the community. As an African woman, i have several times experienced how women have been oppressed by polygamous marriages. I come from a family four children. Polygamy is something that is frequently experienced and witnessed during my life time as a girl and as a woman, because i'm a child born from a polygamous marriage. It has always been painful for me to experience this form of pain and trauma, because my mother was the second wife and a mother of four children, it was very difficult her to give us everything that we needed as children due to three families that my father had to care for. My mother did not choose to marry her husband. She was forced by her parents after her elder sister approached the parents to plead with her so that they can get married to the same man. Her elder sister thought that if he chooses another wife for her husband, he will not be able to get himself another wife.Is a system that is used in a traditional marriage by African people to keep their wealth intact. I have discovered that there are so many who are troubled by this problem. I recalled just the other day one of the most prominent politician in Kenya passed a way and he left behind two widow.The second wife was denied a chance to view the body of her late husband and she was not recognised or being introduced in the funeral. Here are some of the challenges of polygamous marriage; 1:Partiality of husbands. When the husband shows preference for the particular wife, this leads to jealousy and hatred towards the most favored wife. When jealousy among the wives become very bad, they resort to killing the other in order to become the sole favorite.
- 2. 2:Competition and Opposition. There is a strong contest for love for the husband. One uses every kind of power to win his love. They often become enemies and oppose one another as a way of pulling off from the marriage relationship. They also tell their children bad things about the other women. 3:Greed and envy for possession. That others should not get hold of that which she has. Everything has to be done or controlled her own way as the first wife and the rest should not get anything. 4:Tribalism. Is one of the causes fights, they often say to those who do not belong to the mans culture that children born out of this marriage are combination of two cultures and therefore they dont belong to that family. 5:Gossip. Is also one of the weakness in polygamous marriage which women do with the outsiders talking bad about other wives in their absence. 6:Lack of trust. Womeninpolygamousmarriage donottrust eachother,whentheysee one of themwiththe husband theyconclude thatshe is the topicof discussion. 7:Education.
