Project Myrtis
Basic aims of the project

To get familiar with the art of cinema and the
basic techniques of film narration

To learn how to write a script

To create short films (3 stages: pre-production,
production, post-production)

To develop their imagination and to find out
ways of creative self expression

To cultivate their sense of aesthetic

To use ICT creatively
Basic aims of the project
Ancient History was used as a source of
artistic inspiration and creativity.
The question
In油Greek油mythology,油Myrtis油or油Myrtida
was油a油lyrical油poet油by油Anthidos油of油Boeotia.油
Myrtis, a girl of ancient Athens came to life
the 21st century.
 Myrtis was an 11-year-old girl from
Athens who died during the
Peloponnesian War and buried in a mass
grave that also contained 150 other people.
 The girl lived the siege of Athens as well
as the subsequent pestilence and it is
estimated that she probably died of
typhoid fever.
 After 3 years of study, Greek and foreign
scientists were able to reconstruct a model
of her face, since her skull was found in
excellent condition in the mass grave of
Keramikos in 1995.
 In 2010 scientists have successfully made a
digital model of her and present it to the
public.

The students conducted research about the

Costumes  Hairstyle - Toilette

The teacher油guided the students research
and supported them in the qualification of
their material.油

Currency - Measures
Professions - Jobs
Feasts - Birthday
Peloponnesian war
and the effects on peoples lives.

 The students used the technique of
brainstorming to provide an identity to
Myrtis.
 They imagined her as the daughter of
Diokles and Danae who is forced to
help her father in agora to sell his
merchandise as a fisherman (there were
not any boys in the family).

 The action time of the story is the day of
the birthday of Myrtis, one year before the
outbreak of the Peloponnesian war.
 That very day we watch her making the
preparations about her birthday
neglecting her tragic end.

The students decided to film three scenes in
Ancient Athens:
at Ancient Agora, where Myrtis helps her
father to sell his merchandise,
at Gyneconite, where she plays with her
friends several games,
at the kitchen of her home where the
preparations of her birthday was held.

 Then the students wrote the scenes about
the modern period of time.
 These scenes were the bridge between
today and yesterday, the present and the
past.

 At the Cinema Museum the students
filmed the scenes in Ancient Athens with
the guidance of the museum educator.
 That experience made them to realize the
value of cooperation in the achievement of
their goals.

Post production
 The post production process began after
all the footage had been captured.油
 Editing is actually one of most
interesting part of the film making
process.油
Mr Papagrigorakis visited our school
and had a discussion with the students.

Use of experiential methods like
brainstorming or role play.

Implementation tools: Web 2.0
The project used the educational platform
of Edmodo. An e-class had been created
in order to enhance communication
among the teams to promote the
exchange of ideas, to qualify the
reliability of the sources.
The students used online text
editing software (e.g., Google
docs), video editing software
(e.g., Moviemaker), Adobe
Premiere) & audio editing
software (e.g., Audacity).

Project myrtis

  • 1. With camera in hand... Project Myrtis
  • 2. Basic aims of the project To get familiar with the art of cinema and the basic techniques of film narration To learn how to write a script To create short films (3 stages: pre-production, production, post-production)
  • 3. To develop their imagination and to find out ways of creative self expression To cultivate their sense of aesthetic To use ICT creatively Basic aims of the project
  • 4. Ancient History was used as a source of artistic inspiration and creativity.
  • 7. Myrtis, a girl of ancient Athens came to life the 21st century.
  • 8. Myrtis was an 11-year-old girl from Athens who died during the Peloponnesian War and buried in a mass grave that also contained 150 other people. The girl lived the siege of Athens as well as the subsequent pestilence and it is estimated that she probably died of typhoid fever.
  • 9. After 3 years of study, Greek and foreign scientists were able to reconstruct a model of her face, since her skull was found in excellent condition in the mass grave of Keramikos in 1995. In 2010 scientists have successfully made a digital model of her and present it to the public.

  • 11. The students conducted research about the following issues of every day life in Ancient Athens: Social classes in Ancient Athens- Rights & Obligations Education of boys & girls Toys - Games Costumes Hairstyle - Toilette P r e p r o d u c t i o n
  • 12. The teacher油guided the students research and supported them in the qualification of their material.油 Nutrition - Recipes Currency - Measures Professions - Jobs Feasts - Birthday Peloponnesian war and the effects on peoples lives. P r e p r o d u c t i o n
  • 13. The students used the technique of brainstorming to provide an identity to Myrtis. They imagined her as the daughter of Diokles and Danae who is forced to help her father in agora to sell his merchandise as a fisherman (there were not any boys in the family). P r e p r o d u c t i o n
  • 14. The action time of the story is the day of the birthday of Myrtis, one year before the outbreak of the Peloponnesian war. That very day we watch her making the preparations about her birthday neglecting her tragic end. P r e p r o d u c t i o n
  • 15. The students decided to film three scenes in Ancient Athens: at Ancient Agora, where Myrtis helps her father to sell his merchandise, at Gyneconite, where she plays with her friends several games, at the kitchen of her home where the preparations of her birthday was held. P r e p r o d u c t i o n
  • 16. Then the students wrote the scenes about the modern period of time. These scenes were the bridge between today and yesterday, the present and the past. P r e p r o d u c t i o n
  • 19. Visit at Cinema Museum P r o d u c t i o n
  • 20. At the Cinema Museum the students filmed the scenes in Ancient Athens with the guidance of the museum educator. That experience made them to realize the value of cooperation in the achievement of their goals. P r o d u c t i o n

  • 23. Post production The post production process began after all the footage had been captured.油 Editing is actually one of most interesting part of the film making process.油

  • 26. Methods o Use of experiential methods like brainstorming or role play. o Use of ICT, and more specifically of Web 2.0 tools, in order to communicate their ideas, to write collaboratively and to express themselves artistically.
  • 27. Implementation tools: Web 2.0 The project used the educational platform of Edmodo. An e-class had been created in order to enhance communication among the teams to promote the exchange of ideas, to qualify the reliability of the sources.
  • 28. The students used online text editing software (e.g., Google docs), video editing software (e.g., Moviemaker), Adobe Premiere) & audio editing software (e.g., Audacity).
