Semiotics is the study of signs and how they are interpreted. Anything can be considered a sign if someone interprets it to represent something other than itself. Charles Peirce contributed to semiotics by stating that people only think through signs and nothing is inherently a sign without interpretation. Roland Barthes expanded on this, noting that signs have a signifier, the object given meaning, and a signified, the meaning or concept. He distinguished between denotation, the literal or surface meaning, and connotation, the cultural and interpretive meanings. Stuart Hall built on these ideas of encoding and decoding, stating that media language encodes preferred meanings for audiences to decode and understand.
The document discusses the use of new media technologies in the production process. An iMac computer was used for software like Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro X, Garageband, and Photoshop, which allowed for editing, exporting, color grading, splicing, and applying graphic effects. Final Cut Pro X was central to the development as it enabled effective editing. Camera equipment was initially inexpensive and unreliable, causing shaking and lighting issues, but outdoor locations and tripods helped stabilize shots in the second year. Logic Pro X and studying music technology provided opportunities to alter soundtracks.
The document discusses how a short film idea uses and subverts conventions of the genre. It will use conventions like a limited number of main characters and everyday locations to avoid complications. While it will portray stereotypical characters to follow audience expectations, it will subvert the convention of dramas always having happy endings. The short film will be a social realism drama about pressures on teenagers today and end on a sad note to leave the audience thinking, like the film Titanic.
The document discusses the locations that will be used for a short film. It proposes setting parts of the film at a school to reflect the ordinary lives of the characters who spend much of their time there. Another scene will take place in a forest to convey feelings of isolation and confusion. Additional locations mentioned include a house to feel homey and central London to portray busyness. The document was then renewed, changing the disruption scene to a coffee shop which symbolizes both bitterness and potential sweetness, and reducing the number of locations to simplify the story for a short film format.
The title sequence depicts a male antagonist who has not been able to move on from the death of his loved one, driving him to insanity and to start murdering innocent women in similar ways to his lover's death as a way to remember her. He keeps trophies or possessions from his victims. The sequence aims to convey themes of despair over his loss, the psychological effects of his inability to grieve, and his acts of remembrance through murder to develop a thriller genre sequence that uses conventions of the form.
Mohamed plays the antagonist in a 2 minute thriller sequence. He was chosen for the role because his body posture and gestures fit well with being the antagonist. Additionally, Mohamed is very confident.

The document discusses props needed for various scenes of a film production. It describes inflatable legs and a ladder purchased on eBay to create the illusion that a person has been hanged in scene two. Watches and necklaces already owned will be used as props in the basement scene to represent items taken from victims. A noose made from rope purchased locally will be used in a scene where the antagonist stares at it while sitting in a borrowed armchair smoking a borrowed cigarette.
