ARX - A Generic Method for Assessing the Quality of De-Identified Health Dataarx-deidentifier

Talk held at Medical Informatics Europe (MIE) 2016. Abstract: Data sharing plays an important role in modern biomedical research. Due to the inherent sensitivity of health data, patient privacy must be protected. De-identification means to transform a dataset in such a way that it becomes extremely difficult for an attacker to link its records to identified individuals. This can be achieved with different types of data transformations. As transformation impacts the information content of a dataset, it is important to balance an increase in privacy with a decrease in data quality. To this end, models for measuring both aspects are needed. Non-Uniform Entropy is a model for data quality which is frequently recommended for de-identifying health data. In this work we show that it cannot be used in a meaningful way for measuring the quality of data which has been transformed with several important types of data transformation. We introduce a generic variant, which overcomes this limitation. We performed experiments with real-world datasets, which show that our method provides a unified framework in which the quality of differently transformed data can be compared to find a good or even optimal solution to a given data de-identification problem. A Tool for Optimizing De-Identified Health Data for Use in Statistical Classi...arx-deidentifier

Presented at IEEE CBMS 2017: When individual-level health data is shared in biomedical research the privacy of patients and probands must be protected. This is typically achieved with methods of data de-identification, which transform data in such a way that formal guarantees about the degree of protection from re-identification can be provided. In the process it is important to minimize loss of information to ensure that the resulting data is useful. A typical use case is the creation of predictive models for knowledge discovery and decision support, e.g. to infer diagnoses or to predict outcomes of therapies. A variety of methods have been developed which can be used to build robust statistical classifiers from de-identified data. However, they have not been tuned for practical use and they have not been implemented into mature software tools. To bridge this gap, we have extended ARX, an open source anonymization tool for health data, with several new features. We have implemented a method for optimizing the suitability of de-identified data for building statistical classifiers and a method for assessing the performance of classifiers built from de-identified data. All methods are accessible via a comprehensive graphical user interface. We have used our methods to create logistic regression models from a patient discharge dataset for predicting the costs of hospital stays. The results show that our method enables the creation of privacy-preserving classifiers with optimal prediction accuracy.

In delivery processes from pharmaceutical wholesaler's sales offices to the client's facilities, which are the target of this case study, an assistance system using handheld devices and paper slips is used. The introduction of AR assistance systems is beginning to be investigated to improve operations in these processes. However, as AR is not yet highly accepted in Japanese industry, a VR environment has been constructed to enable the cycle consisting of prototyping, comparison with existing systems, and sharing the results with stakeholders as efficiently as possible. Based on the preliminary evaluation results in this VR environment, the reproducibility and effectiveness of the VR simulation as well as the superiority of the AR assistance method were confirmed. Furthermore, feedback from various sessions, including the demo session at ISMAR2024, provided insights into the importance of balancing conventional concepts and physical environments with digital assistance methods.
