Archaeologists from UBC and members of the Scowlitz First Nation have been collaborating on archaeological research and heritage projects at the Qithyl site near Chilliwack since 1992. The projects involve excavating burial mounds and house features, bringing students to learn, and creating a virtual museum exhibit to share Scowlitz history and culture. Scowlitz community members guide the research and teach traditional practices like making red ochre paint. The collaboration aims to preserve Scowlitz heritage and pass knowledge to new generations.

Stó:lō Tribal Council, directed
Gordon Mohs and Sonny
McHalsie to invite archaeologists
from UBC to begin working at
DhRl16, Qithyl (Scowlitz) a large
site on the Harrison River.

First Visit, Spring 1992. The immediate concern was the erosion of the
river bank and the large number of perishable artifacts that were being
washed away by the river.

During our first visit to the site, on the
terrace above the river, we found a large
cluster of intact mounds.

The Chief and Council at Sq’éwlets asked us to investigate the
mounds and demonstrate that they were part of the ancestral
cemetery on the river. Chief Frank Malloway councels us on how to
proceed with excavations at Burial Mound 1.

Over six seasons (1992-1999) we mapped and excavated at the site—
including this large house feature—bringing dozens of students from UBC,
SFU, and other colleges and universities to work at Qithyil--DhRl16.

Every year, groups of Sq’éwlets and Stó:lō school children and teachers visited.

Clifford Hall, Betty Charlie, Jenny Pennier, and many others guided us all (Dana
Lepofsky—in this case) in our joint research….and still do today.

• Sq'éwlets: A Stó:lo-Coast Salish Community in the Fraser River Valley

Fishing has long been an important part of the history and culture of Sunnmøre, Norway. During the Stone Age, tools were developed specifically for fishing and boats became necessary for transportation and catching fish. In the Viking Age, fish provided a key source of sustenance and were dried, salted, or made into lutefisk. Small, less advanced boats were used for fishing rather than Viking ships. Around 100 years ago, engines were introduced which allowed boats to travel longer distances and faster, requiring workers who could repair them. #16: My colleague Mike Ananny at USC and I have been comparing the RRN to other STSs—like those used by news organizations and journalists—and are writing a paper about the ways in which notions of publicness are represented in the design of these systems and signalled to stakeholder publics. The main takeaway from this diagram today should be that these systems are not just software or code—they are constituted by the interplay between PEOPLE (Represented by circles), SOFTWARE SYSTEMS (squares), DATA STORES (cylinders) and the movement of information and their transformation through human action between all of these nodes.
