Current Employment: Highgate Early
Learning Centre 2010-2016
Over the past 6 years I have taken on many roles whilst working with children at
Highgate Early Learning Centre. In my first two years I was a co-team leader in the
Toddler room working with 5 staff and 15 children. During this period I was managing
a team, managing time for planning with a co-team leader and our responsibilities. I
also took on the challenge of training staff in computer skills, observations and
behaviour management. I learned effective ways of communicating and working
collaboratively with parents and staff through the orientation process. Settling parent
and children¡¯s anxieties, completing forms, documentation, getting to know children
and their individual needs and developing positive trusting relationships as a primary
care giver.
During my third year at Highgate I took on the role as the Team leader in the Infants
room. With a new team of staff and a new room to understand I dived in head first
getting to know 20 new families. This orientation process was much more in depth
with food and developmental checklists being completed and individual routines
sheets being updated weekly. I made it a priority to engage the infants in creative art
and messy play experiences. In the room I also achieved implementation of music,
art and dramatic play experiences. In this year, I then took the opportunity to take a
term off and travel the world. I was very lucky to be given this opportunity. This year
was by far the most demanding year, physically, emotionally and mentally
professionally.
In 2013 my fourth year at Highgate, I lowered my hours to begin studying my
Bachelor of Early Childhood Education. I began as a casual staff member supporting
all the rooms and educators in the centre. I moved from room to room getting to
know all the children, each rooms, routines, staff dynamics and responsibilities. I
would take over team leader responsibilities as needed, delegating and guiding staff,
maintaining a positive and calm atmosphere when change occurred. It was
interesting that in way, this role was more demanding as there were expectations of
me in each room and I contributed accordingly.
The next year I took on the part time position of Kindergarten assistant in the 3 year
old kindergarten room. The role gave me more time to plan experiences for the
children, document learning in group and individual learning stories, plan short and
long term goals and interest descriptions.
I was very lucky to continue this position and move up to the four year old
Kindergarten room in 2016 with the same group of children. The Kindergarten
teacher and I work harmoniously with both of us implementing a range of projects,
discussions, incursions and excursions. I also took on the role as cooking captain.
Through this role I am teaching children about cooking, measurement, hygiene,
health and wellbeing. Through the cooking experiences the children are developing
their fine motor skills, manners, tasting new foods, patience, turn taking, and safety
in the kitchen and with instruments in the kitchen. Through the cooking program I
have achieved so much with the children and it has become a part of our regular
routine in the room now. I have also implemented a behaviour guidance reform in the
room inspired by Bialik College's values and positive reinforcement strategies. This
has changed the children¡¯s understanding of how to respect each other and the
environment and their responsibilities in Kindergarten.
My time at Highgate has been challenging, engaging, educational,
inspiring, comfortable and familiar. I began my career at Highgate. I have seen staff
come and go, frameworks change, the centre, the staff, the families. And yet,
something has always stayed the same, the value, and the pride, myself and others
take on in working with children. I can honestly say I am lucky, to come to work and
be greeted each day and laugh. My passion is working with children. I know my
learning journey will continue past Highgate. I am optimistic about the positive impact
I can make in my next chapter of my teaching.
