Selena was born in Lake Jackson, Texas in 1917 and grew up in Corpus Christi. She started singing at age 3 and her father formed her band, Selena y Los Dinos, when she was 9. Selena became famous in the Tejano music genre and was expanding her career when she was shot and killed by Yolanda Saldivar, the former manager of her fan club, at age 23 in 1995. Her funeral was attended by over 60,000 people and she continues to be remembered through tribute concerts, memorial websites, and the 1997 film about her life starring Jennifer Lopez.
