Sparta was a complete military society due to the poor quality of its land and its need to conquer neighboring territories. Spartans owned land communally and only had one job - to serve as warriors. Boys were taken from their families at age 7 and raised collectively, undergoing harsh physical training. Spartan women had more freedoms than other Greek women, including access to education, and were expected to produce strong male offspring to serve as soldiers. The Spartan way of life was focused entirely on military strength and service.
